Advertising is a subjective thing. If they like the work that firm is doing then why not. At least the work was kept in Canada. Remember spirited energy? Yup. New York firm if'n I recollect correctly...

I have to agree with Myrna Driedger....

“After the fiasco with Spirited Energy, I can’t believe the NDP government would do something like this again,” she said, noting New York-based Interbrand was handed the contract for that failed branding campaign. “This is a big slam to local business.”

The NDP government just doesn't get it.

yes...and no. They themselves estimate between 300 and 500K

200K is a big difference.. what if it was 200K less for a mind blowing better advert?

The Premier is a social worker, he doesn't concern himself with numbers.

This sounds like Buy Local again. Are the manitoba based advertising companies willing to refuse business from outside manitoba? no? Then don't complain when someone else gets business from manitoba.

Buy local is a good plan, don't you think?

The Convention Center had a 26 sofa and chair order, specified by a local design firm going to a U.S. firm, for a renovation in their building and the local manager went onto google and found a local manufacturer to make it out of the same material, except the construction was changed in such a way that it was better for the Convention Center.
Everyone was happy, especially the local firm that got an incredible boost in sales.

Yup, buying local is great when it makes the most financial sense.

Advertising is a no brainer and could have meant a lot to any local supplier.
That $2,000,0000 spirited energy was the perfect example. WE spent $1,500,000 for those words with the rest for advertising!
New York ad firm loves Manitoba! our NDP brain's at work! I know nothing about advertising, but the 1st thought I had was to have a made-in Manitoba contest, open only to Manitobans to "possibly" choose a new slogan for our Province with 3 prizes, $25,000, $15,000 and a 3rd prize of $10,000 for three winners!- $50,000 and you have another $1,000,000 to advertise it with all local papers, and why didnt our great NDP thinkers have a damn clue about spending our money in our province?

Because they got taken out to 529?

I *really* hope that the $2.1 million funnelled to tha New York ad firm for the otherwise useless "Spirited Energy" campaign, was actually a cover for lobbying in Washington.

We have an export-based economy. The Americans have a habit of blocking Manitoban grain and livestock. They use labelling rules to block Manitoban livestock, and they simply overrule NAFTA on wheat.

I really hope some of that $2.1 million became political donations, or a couple dozen seats at $1000/plate dinners hosted for various Congressmen. Manitoba couldn't get away with that itself - no politician wants to be caught being foreign funded. But a New York ad agency with a deep concern about protectionism - and with deep pockets - would have some influence.

At least that's what I hope.
