There is new 1% dedicated municipal tax proposal in front of Evil Doer, intended to fund Manitoba municipalities' infrastructure. Is this a reasonable new tax? Should we be increasing taxation to help fund our problematic infrastructure costs?

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities conducted a poll asking Manitoban's if they supported such a new tax. 54% said they do indeed support it.

Does this poll indicate most Manitobans support such a tax?

In brodbeck's column today he says: "Baloney. If you actually read the poll they commissioned, the results are not as supportive as they claim.

Typical brodbeck. That poll is black and white. Is asks if you in favour or not. Not in brodbeck's world though. Because the in favour side says somewhat and strongly brodbeck suggests that is not as supportive as the MMP claims. By that logic one can assume only 12% oppose the new tax.

I'm actually in agreement with the poll. It does say 54% of Manitobans support the new tax.

How else can we spin this?

Why not make one ONE ONE flat tax of 20%. Have everything work out on that revenue. 20%.
That's all, no more paper work, no more hiding weird taxes, just a miserable 20% tax.
Then, all the money the taxpayers have left over can be spent for whatever reason they have or want.

If the province cannot move 1% around within their existing budget, these guys should not be in power and entrusted with spending tax dollars.

Btw GOM what does "somewhat support" really mean? Thanks, but I'll stick with the 24% number.

The "somewhat" figure ususally means I'm ok with it so long as it's someone else paying and not me.

3 of thompsons taxes were rejected.
But that is not the important part. This comment is.
“Quite frankly, this climate was not the time to be looking at additional tax burdens,” said Intergovernmental Affairs Minister and Thompson MLA Steve Ashton."

Polsters need to learn how to ask questions.

The question should be.
Would you support a 1% sales tax increase to be used for Infrastructure only.

YES or NO.
there should be none of the shaded of grey BS answers like eg. 1 to 5, 5 being very much and 1 being not so much. this leads the respondent to say yes thinking he is saying no by responding "Yes, Not so much"

Never heard that one. Hey Deank, how come youse is the only one that has trouble on this forum? For everybody else it works perfectly. I think you need to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows Office. Then reboot twelve times. That should solve your problem.

I agree. But, that said, the poll does not provide a neutral opinion. So you do have to agree or disagree. The shades of grey allow the Tom Brodbeck's and Marty Gold's of this world to spin them for the gullible of this world.

By forcing a response on a two point scale (Yes, No) you'd be forcing more people to respond "I don't know".

Further, there is no such response as "Yes, Not so much".

Usually the way it is worded is more like:
Strongly agree
Somewhat agree
Somewhat disagree
Strongly disagree

And as GOM pointed out, everyone was forced to choose. I suspect if there was a "neutral" you would find more people sitting on the fence.

"Would YOU be willing to pay a 1% sales tax increase to be used for infrastructure only.

I would vote. NO, I am not willing to pay 1% tax.
I would however be willing to vote "yes" on cutting back Provincial employee's salaries by 5%. Including MLA's salaries and a 40 % reduction in what they are allowed to claim for expenses. Smile

Jesus... I was just at Taxtpis.ca Checking out a tax comparison between all 10 provinces.

DAMN. is all I have to say. In my tax bracket I pay the second highest provincial taxes in all of Canada.

BC, ON and AB are the lowest.

Over all, Manitobans pay a lot of provincial Income tax. Maybe our government should learn how to budget better, and while they are at it. Learn how to get more bang for our buck!

Why does there need to be any new taxes?

I think the politicians need to learn how to spend money more wisely...stop spending, and then coming back to the public begging for more money (and when they don't get it...stealing it).
