this is ridiculous. Should every downtown plan automatically get approval just because it involves entertainment? HELL NO. But people who live in a downtown/exchange area should know right off the top there will be MULTIPLE places starting up that make noise.

Try and name one successful downtown in any city that is not the central entertainment district.

Can't refer to them as NIMBY's, cause they don't have yards.

I wonder how these people would feel if their tax incentive grants were taken away?

I think what makes the Exchange District so compelling is the eclectic mix of business and residential. It also should evolve into THE entertainment district of the city, if it isn't already.

I agree with your points, and I'd also like to see a little more small-scale manufacturing (etc) in there as well.

Yeah, I know. When I was looking to set up shop a few years ago, I was looking predominantly in the Exchange. There are quite a few places there, but not as many as there once were.

Changing dynamic of the area, y'know. Wink

How can one buy a condo (for the purposes of living in) without acknowledging that there will be noise? That is what makes downtown "downtown" and noise, in some cases, means that there is life downtown after five p.m. I do not understand their objections.

That's the same sort of situation as people who buy a relatively cheap house next to the slaughterhouse/meat processing plant, then complain about the smell.

We make the beds we lie in.

It's weird. People mainly move to the Exchange to be part of the hip party culture - why would they now complain about what they pay a premium for. There are certainly many quiet areas close to downtown that are not affected by nightlife, and they could have chosen to live there.

I work by the Health Sciences Centre, and there's a pretty active nightlife around here. Smile

Perhaps it has become more active than they had anticipated?

Perhaps they got old and cranky? I can relate to that...

I think if people have concerns, they should express themseleves. It can only lead to better planning and proccesses.

Apparently the Liquor Inspectors have said that they are against this.

Ummm....does something seem strange about them making this known publicly?

There is a great blurring amoungst Manitoba regulatory bodies. The liquor inspectors need to stick to their knitting.
