This ACS?

EDMONTON -- Charges linked to an Edmonton police photo radar contract won't stop the city from using the technology, Coun. Mike Nickel said Saturday.
The RCMP has charged Edmonton police officers Det. Tom Bell and Staff Sgt. Kerry Nisbett with breach of trust and accepting secret commissions.
Affiliated Computer Systems of Dallas and its Canadian subsidiary, ACS Public Sector Solutions, were charged with offering secret commissions.
ACS was awarded a $90-million, untendered 20-year contract with Edmonton for photo radar services.
The contract was later revoked by the city.

Nah.. couldn't be.

must be a totally different company of the same name... no way that Winnipeg would sign a contract with these guys 1 year after that story broke. Just would not happen.

That was 4 years ago, anyone know the update on the charges?

Do these 2 cops now work for WRHA?

Although these pigs admittedly were taking lavish gifts, they were found to be "graft-free" if you can believe it.

"They're also accused of twisting the research data to make photo radar look more efficient than it actually was."

I wonder if any other of those references are now accused of the thing like in Edmonton?

Heh. I'm going to have to watch those videos when I get home, as I fall in the "Don't speed and be an idiot" camp.

There better be something reeeeeal good in there to convince me. Otherwise, I'll still consider the red light cameras to be an idiot tax.

Keep in mind there are TWO issues with red light cameras: 1) a red light infraction and b) a speeding infraction.

If anyone goes through a red light I'm all for fining the bejesus out of them. But the issue is the system installed and the protocols followed are traps.

Most people, when approaching a red light, either slow down and stop or speed up to get through the light. The yellow light should be timed in such a fashion as to not in and of itself be the problem. Winnipeg has very quick yellows.

The speeding element often only comes into play when peeps accelerate to beat the light. They may well have NOT been speeding up to that point.

Some will argue you should not speed up, but there is a point when approaching the intersection where you cannot stop in time.

"Winnipeg has very quick yellows."

Let me fix that for you.

"Winnipeg has very quick yellows at intersections that have cameras".

See the thing of it is, we have a quasi requirement that the cameras only be used at lights where this is a demonstrated problem. ie more accidents. And the accidents happen more often at the quick yellow intersections soo......

Grumpy just described the Dilemma Zone. That's the term coined for the result of the preferred timing sweet-spot that these companies exploit to maximize infractions. It's common sense. Intersections ambers' functional purpose is to orchestrate the safe clearance of the intersection - not put the light to work like a slot machine to produce dividends - at the expense of our safety (that's the part they're hiding from and understandably so). Damn disgrace and they should be ashamed. The above is common-knowledge in this industry in general as well as with the cities that partner with them. Ask your councillor today why the city uses short, dangerous ambers of 4.0 at all intersections regardless of length and other factors.

Well we cannot look into it as the mofos won't release the statistics.

Wanna' bet they're hiding the numbers because they show themselves to be fcuked?

Yup. They are HIDING behind the real stats. They claim some stats are not included in the police stats because they are below a certain value??? It's smoke and mirrors by the bozos.

Actually they're hiding in front of the real stats - because those can never be made known to the public at this point in the scheme. Those stats reveal the expected increase in collissions that come with intersection cameras. As well, they will evidence the expected result of inadequate, dangerous, short-ambers - a marked increase in rear-end collisions. And the province allows them to fudge their data/reports in order to keep claiming that the program has improved safety. We will prove that they damn well know the opposite to be true - and have for years. No wonder why they're hiding under their desks.

Ya gotta know that when the cops start lying to you we've got trouble in River City.

It seems that we've had a succession of really bad police chiefs, imo anyway.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1299356/The-big-switch-As-midnight-tolls-end-speed-cameras-county-Britain-soon-follow.html?ITO=1490

"
Britain’s network of 6,000 speed cameras could be dramatically
reduced after a raft of councils looked set to follow Oxfordshire’s move
and switch theirs off.The county’s entire network of 72 cameras
will be switched off at midnight tonight after the coalition Government
pulled the plug on their funding.
"

why you might ask? Well because the UK Feds have mandated that the councils that use them, dont actually get the money, the money instead goes to the Feds.

But its not about the money right?

Yes that's another recent development that exposes the ridiculous debate as to whether safety or revenue. The safety claims are unsubstaniated, self-serving rhetoric - sponsored by the city partners - and it remains shocking that the people (including the media) have allowed them to get away with it this long.

The Freep coverage will be delayed until next week. As I've been told - last week was a busy one with drownings and murder/s. Also vacations of two Editors who return Monday.

To me the stadium is the big scandal here that the media is ignoring.

Why is no one arresting the Aspers for continually telling the governments one price, and jacking it up after the government puts in some money. The Asperrs have openly joked about how they plan to get financing for projects, tell the province what they wanna hear, and after they commit, give them the real figures.

That fast-sell approach to getting things moving in a desired direction was described by Sinclair Jr in last Saturday's Freep. He recounted how Izzy helped strategize with the Jets NHL-hopeful group back in the 70's. His advise - in a negotiations break with the league - was to advise the reps to tell the league anything and whatever they needed to get the deal done - and then let the shortfalls reveal themselves later when both sides were committed. People should find that interesting however any other party that enters contracts with such "pledges" is equally guilty. No private party would enter such an agreement however the difference in this case is that all parties are "negotiating" with our money and not theirs. Taxpayers need to stand up at some point and withdraw their funding of all these parties until some trusted stewardship is ensured.
