What the heck is up with putting a set of lights in there? Have there been any accidents in the area?

That is how Winnipeg City planners manage traffic. Winnipeg is the most favourite customer at Traffic Lights is Us.

Anyone want to lay bets on a traffic camera appearing there within 2 months?

there weren't lights there before?

i haven't really paid much attention to it...but it would seem a reasonable place for lights given the size of the intersection(s) (N or S).

Maybe they were replacing lights there?

there have never been lights there, ever

the amount of traffic on Saskatchewan does not really warrant lights

The lights are there to help the poor trucks get across that intersection. there is a truck depot on Saskatchewan close to the airport, and getting across is a real hassle, but dont worry because I have it on good authority that all of route 90 hasn't been set up as yet to allow traffic to flow in an orderly manner without getting red lights to make stop and starting an on going hassle in Wpg.

Yes there has been, including a very serious one that involved a death. I drive that section of route 90 as well as use Saskatchewan from St James to get onto Route 90 at least once a week during afternoon rush hour. Some of the risks that I see drivers take are absolutely amazing. I also think this will help with the truck traffic that uses Saskatchewan to get to Route 90. I also think it may slow people down, yes the speed limit along that stretch is I believe either 70, may be 80 but people are going sometimes upwards of 100-110 along there and it can get quick slick on the northbound section when the blacktop is wet. I have seen many a spin out, 180, jump the curb, hit the light pole on that section because of the excessive speed.
Another concept that I have heard as well is there are plans for road construction out of the new Canada Post building to join up with Saskatchewan.
Just my thoughts, I am not always in favour of what the Streets Department does and only time will tell if this is a good move or not.

the truck depot has been there for many years. It has not been a problem up to now.

With no new development in the area there is no real reason to do this.

the biggest problem with that intersection is the insane idea of dropping down to three lanes by Border street taking the flow and the signage announcing that happening being very crappy AND it happening right at Saskatchewan. That is what causes the potential for accidents in my opinion.

Again though.. anyone want to take a bet on a camera being there within 2 months?

Actually the answer is not create yet another stupid fricking traffic impediment rather just stop traffic from crossing there. Make them go to another intersection. Christ almighty, our planners are the most useless and ignorant and unimaginative in the whole fricking world.
