Saskatchewan moves to 'improve effectiveness' of Senate by electing senators

Full story here.

IMHO Each province should get 6 senators and each territory should get 3 senators

Divide provinces in to senatorial electorates and allow the people of said province to vote on their senator. More power to the people, but this is something liberals and most left leaning ideologies want to avoid as it erodes their grasp on power.

We all know the Liberals and NDP know what is best for us, why should we be allowed to vote for senators? Lets just keep the old system and let the rulers keep all the power.

They are supposed to be a check against tyrants. Problem is it does not work properly, especially when a governing party can just fill the ranks with loyal party supporters.

I would not like to see a PM with absolute power. As we all know, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yes it should be elected and cut down to one per province not the currant number as it is stupid and very pricey . Most of the people in here have bought their seat Mira Spivak come on

Not sure how electing the Senate makes them any more useful.

Our system calls for a chamber of sober second thought....the Senate. However, it has become a chamber of political appointments which should be done away with. Electing people will go a long way in legitimizing their purpose imo.

You're right...God is in the details.

If it is to be an elected senate, imo, anybody should be able to run for the position.
