65 planes for $9 Billion, but the government has no clue that when you buy a new Honda you get free maintenance for 10 years, so Harper agrees to pay another $9 Billion, maybe less , maybe more? over the next 10 years?
Talk about wasting resources, but for the Conservatives, Navy $18 Billion, Air Farce $18 Billion, money for their retirement funds- lots, money for old age .3 of 1%. lol

Kadre affair- How am I going to vote for Harper again?? let me see! he's the best of what is available! Woe is Canada!

Ahhh ....the maintenance is for 20 years, but, the point is that we will need these machines in a few years.

a fighter plane isn't a honda, and nowhere near similar.. the F-35 seems like a reasonable choice in aircraft to replace our ancient F-16's that we are using at the moment.

From wikipedia:
The F-35 is intended to be the world's premier strike aircraft
through 2040, with close- and long-range air-to-air capability second
only to that of the F-22 Raptor.[10]
The F-35 is required to be four times more effective than existing
fighters in air-to-air combat, eight times more effective in
air-to-ground combat, and three times more effective in reconnaissance
and suppression of air defenses – all while having better range and
requiring less logistics support.[16]
Lockheed Martin has suggested that the F-35 could also replace the
USAF's F-15C/D air superiority fighter and F-15E Strike Eagles in the
air superiority role.[17]

They are replacing CF-18's not F-16's, Canada has never used the F-16.

I'm a little surprised they didn't consider the new upgraded F-15 "Silent Eagle" that Boeing is offering to South Korea which would have cost a fair bit less but would have also been less capable. Overall I'd say it's not a total waste to buy one of only 2 real 5th generation fighter aircraft (F-35 and F-22) to replace a 4th gen aircraft designed in the late 1970's.

The alternative would have been to look at getting the new upgraded F-15 (4.5G) or something even older like the Eurofighter or Saab Grippen. All are much older technology compared to the F-35.
