"His No. 1 recommendation is beefed-up powers for the national security
adviser to set security policies and priorities, and oversee
communication between agencies. He also calls for compensation for the
families of the victims."

My response on the FREEP site:

Compensate the victims' families? for what?

Granted, there were
mistakes made...there are ALWAYS mistakes made...most don't get caught because things don't happen that often.

The ONLY compensation to anyone should be from the extremists who bombed the plane to begin with...and ANYONE who supports them.

This is an investigation into a tragedy...and YES, there were a series of issues involving security, however doing an investigation 20 years later presents new issues, such as:

1) available security measures in 1985 are much different than they are now. Most the complaints I've seen referring to this story are suggestions that certain equipment or information should've been used that either didn't exist then, or was so cost prohibitive...it wasn't REASONABLE to use it.

2) the extremists who made the attack are gone...so there's nobody to hold accountable
anymore. This kind of inquiry would be akin to someone robbing a store at gunpoint today, and 20 years from now saying the cops failed to do their job because we SHOULD have had more cops on the streets.

If the inquiry was to uncover that someone within the airlines, or RCMP, or some other agency were actually working WITH the terrorists...then sure...you have a case and someone to prosecute.

Otherwise, the best that SHOULD be gathered from this is a learning lesson, and a chance to look at methods of correcting potential problems for the future.

So how does it work that victims should be compensated by the government (us)? Did we do something that requires us to pay? Does this insinuate that authorities (RCMP, CSIS, etc) are to be held responsible for not preventing an act of terrorism?

What crap!!

I dont get why all the family members needed to be interviewed...

My family died, I am sad and it has impacted me... Okay... well I guess if one was happy about it then maybe cause for further investigation but seems to me to be another waste of money that we typically see in these reviews.

Shouldn't all we need be just the facts?

And another thing....the victims are all dead, so other than family, who receives the compensation.

Does compensation make you feel better when someone close to you dies?

I tell you, the man has gone over to the dark side.

Let's just pray that he doesn't set aside another $300 million for another party 'reconcilliation' affair.

For some yes it doe's why do you think we came up with Life Insurance

I never thought of life insurance as a vehicle to make me feel better after someone died. I thought the point of insurance is to help cover costs of a funeral and in most cases help replace the income of a bread-winner.

Is that why some take out more then is really needed or is that why some people can't wait for the will . Death has turned into an industry just like Marriage everyone has their hands out business and families . We stray from the topic , No we should not compensate victims of this tragedy .

The compensation isn't for the deaths per se, but for the way the authorities handled the case.

The conduct of the RCMP was disgraceful, again, and so was that of CSIS.

That is why Harper is paying. I don't agree with it, but that's the way it goes.

True enough but mistakes are made by all , but should people be compensated . Where do you draw the line hell people want compensation in stores for their inconvenience like driving in from out of town , and finding were out of stock . Maybe some think the world revolves around them .
