The cops are finally cracking down on noisy bikes.

'Bout frigg'n time!!!!!

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/bikers-fume-at-noise-crackdown-96454269.html

One of these biker pinheads is saying that they need the noise to be safe in traffic. Weak excuse imo.

I live two blocks from Corydon and am kept awake with the noise from these small-penised pricks that rev their motors to attract attention on many occasions.

They should take it a step farther and impound the bikes on the spot!

I think the episode is called "the F word" but its not listed on the comedy central site and you cant go straight to the actual southpark site because of the jackasses at comedy central want you to go to theirs since you are Canadian.

You are correct sir!

The episode is called "the F word"

In Canada it can be found on the comedy network video player, look in the video library, I think it's South Park Season 12 or 13....

Very funny episode.

Loud pipes do little to protect you in traffic. But little is better than nothing I suppose. More than once I have almost been hit by people not paying attention. Did not see me, until they heard me. Though if you have to wear ear plugs to ride, you have gone too far.

There has always been a limit on exhaust volume, and all pipes need to be baffled for a safety. Problem is, baffles are easy to remove, and aftermaket pipes are easy to install. IF they remove the baffles and get stopped, then give a fine. IF they are baffled, then no. Because they ARE obeying the law.

The hyperlink should be on the right hand side, under the advertisement, near mid-screen. Should say "share with a friend" or whatever, it'll open a mailto window, just cut and paste the link.

after reading the article, I dont get it. So they are complaining because the device gives an accurate reading now?

sure "excessive noise" is hard to judge I guess and a reasonable decibel limit could be written into law. But if you dont realize your bike is too loud for "normal" people, you really need to get your hearing checked.

seems to me that 92 decibels is a reasonable number to use since 90 is where hearing loss starts

85 is where hearing loss starts...but that's a different discussion.

The new bylaw (which apparently they are ticketing for already and it's not even approved yet) is set at 96dbA for tickets.

The problem I have is that a motorcycle may give off 96dbA at the pipe...but by the time it gets to the rider's ears, or the next car over, it's dissipated to only 90 or 85dbA which is not so bad.

The test should be taken from a distance of at LEAST 1m and THEN if it's over a set amount (like 96dbA) issue the ticket.

I think they should stick the device right up the exhaust pipe and rev the hell out of the motor, just like the a$$hole drivers do in real life....never mind a block away at idle speed sh1t.

yeah.. idle speed is ridiculous at best and likely to fail a challenge to the law stating it was done with intent. how the hell can you intend to idle?

But I guess at idle it being the lowest sound the vehicle would make, sorta makes sense to make it easier to prosecute.

AA they are not ticketing for the "new" bylaw. They are ticketing for the already existing law. Personally I dont think a new bylaw is what is required, a rewrite to the existing law making it more specific might be in order. MIGHT.

They should not allow motorcycles to be louder than cars.

That'll frick up the bikers' heads, but it makes perfect sense to me. I don't understand why there's a difference to begin with.

but it IS true that a louder bike can be a safety thing.

anyone who has ridden will tell you that you either want a loud bike or a fast bike.

And in MB, with the graduated licensing on cycles...you don't START on a "fast" bike.

The noise helps make up for the smaller size (and therefore lack of visibility) compared to other vehicles.

When you learn to ride, you are taught what part of a lane, and what position around other vehicles you should be. It's similar to cars...but not identical.

Unfortunately...cars are driven by humans...who don't always drive ideally, don't always check their mirrors, or look over their shoulders. Mistakes are made.

But a bike that's louder, if someone starts to pull over and cut them off, can pull the clutch and give a little "throttle" to get the attention of that driver...or that driver may hear "something" before they start to pull over and hesitate enough to see the biker.

A faster bike provides an option of moving quicker...accelerating through a situation, and thus avoiding an incident.

Just like the bicycle discussions...there are bad bikers and bad drivers out there. Those who jack up their bikes (or cars) with loud obnoxious pipes...JUST to make noise.

THAT's who this bylaw is supposed to target. And those who use that noise to be a disturbance (ie. going through an underpass and gunning the engine to hear the roar.

Me personally, I think MORE people should be riding cycles...it helps save on gas, better for the environment, better for the person riding (in MANY ways), and helps reduce costs significantly for everyone.

Is there a limit for cars? If there is, probably the same as bikes.

I worked with a guy a few years ago, who was proud of his mighty Dodge.
Could hear it 1/2 a block away ... at idle. Image how loud it was when he accelerated. Never got in any trouble for noise.

Kid two doors down has a crappy old truck, that is far louder than my motorcycle. Never got in any trouble for noise.
His buddies have bangin' stereo's hat set off other car alarms when they roll by. Never got in any trouble for noise, that I know of.

Not just motorcycles being loud.

Difference is, people almost always see cars coming. Not true with motorcycles. Which is why every rider taught to ride like they are invisible. Be more aware than the person in the car, who does not see you. Many of the older bikers have always had the notion that loud pipes save lives.

Most Harley's are far worse then most cars for pollution , inefficient burning. There should be no difference in the noise car or bike makes , and it is time for a big crackdown on both.

Wouldn't a loud bike possibly drown out other traffic noise (such as horns), which would negate any potential safety benefits?

For the record, I've hung around bikers, and when the bikes are roaring at full volume, NONE OF THEM are high fiving each other shouting "YEAH SAFETY"! It's more like, "HELL YEAH - EVERYONE AROUND ME IS PLUGGING THEIR EARS AND NOTICING I'M A BADASS ANTISOCIAL IDIOT"!.

Just like none of the cars in the Maples with subsonic bass levels and
neon lights under the car are doing it to avoid car accidents.
