I think the idea has great merit. High speed police chases are dangerous to the extreme. Many of the accidents caused by stolen car thieves come as the result of a chase or called off chase. Hell the police are wiping each other out now. The cost does not seem too outrageous at $800k annually and $1.6 million up front.

Too bad Paul Rutherford takes a righteous approach in his tone: "Why can't we do something?" and "Are we waiting for a police officer to be killed?" before acting. Whatever sport. You want a police helicopter - take the lead and make it happen yourself, and leave the sanctimony.

How about an AWAX plane flying round and round over WPG?

heh... every four to six months the military "flies" over winnipeg in huge planes. And these are not routine landing and taking off procedures either.
They are mapping.

What a waste of resources that could go into getting all the red lights syncronized!
Stolen vehicle? Just set the lights to red and the thief has to stop ?

This something this city needs and for some reason it gets put down every time by someone when the effort is made to make it come true .
The police are afraid of it being something that hangs around the garage for there is no money to use it as we have to give more priorty to their funding .

Waste of money! Put in rapid transit and give out bus passes and the kids won't need to steal vehicles to get around!

Blame global warming! The kids have fewer winter months to go around hooked onto bumpers...
How many cars will they steal when Winnipeg will have it's first green winter?

What I don't understand is that we can have a traffic helicopter for the radio stations but none for the police. The traffic chopper is paid for by heavy advertising revenue so that avenue is closed to police, but there has to be some way to do it to end the stolen car chasaes on our streets.

Yes it is sad but the last time this Idea got shot down and has not been brought up again . Seems to me if we can send plows down lanes which don't need them why can we not fund this tool for the police .

Waste of money IMO. We do't need more resources to capture car thieves. We need harsher sentencing to keep convicted car thieves off the streets.

Bingo.

Methinks the cops have been watching too much Cops.

Btw..what would 1.9mil and 800k give us in added boots on the street? More cops would do more good that a chopper.

I'd suggest life imprisonment, but offer a chance at parole via the "Death Race" option.

How about we just give these Fricking criminals long jail sentences and get them off the streets. Make em work hard in prison so they never want to come back.

Works for me. Remove TVs. Give em books. Remove steak and pork chops. Give em bread and water. Reestablish the death penalty. Eliminate perks. Time off for good behavior. Two and three for one credits. Rapists get castrated (chemically or whatever).

Yes those sentences would be nice but we Canadians don't and won't vote for it, we talk tough and posture a lot but we are to soft on people hence the fact that all parties voted in the JYOA to begin with . We in the corrections end told people this would be the end result but in it went anyway , no one is talking about repealing it just playing with it .

The problem is Ontario and Quebec dictate policy for Canada. Far too many people are indifferent until it happens to them. Myself, I'm all for acting now rather than waiting for it to happen to me.

heh .. added bonus to the rusty knife sledgehammer
option 1.
convict does it himself with sledghammer, if opting for self castration he gets a kick ass shot of pain killers.

option 2.
We do it with rusty knife. no pain killers. just strap him down.
His choice.

Option 3.
strap guy to a chair that is anchored in concrete, Tie his balls to 30 hp electric motor that has been geared down to a very slow rpm. Give the guy a joystick and have him hold a button. When button is released the motor starts to wind up the rope tied to said man's balls.

Sit back and watch or have a live webcast on the internet, with the following caption "Crime in Manitoba ends when this convict falls asleep." "justice served."
