Manitoba Tories are introducing a private member's bill that would
withhold welfare payments for those in breach of their court-orders in
serious offences. Progressive Conservative Justice Critic Kelvin
Goertzen says there are more than 10-thousand outstanding warrants in
Manitoba. He says taxpayers should not have to provide a hand-out to
dangerous criminals evading the law. The bill would require the province
to cross-reference its list of people on the lam, with people
collecting welfare.. and stop flowing money to them, until they answer
for their crimes.

About time if you ask me, of course the bleeding hearts will say it will spur even more crime, not thinking ofcourse that the crim is probably still committing crimes cause who can live off that 500/per month these days or whatever it is, still if you wanted by the law you shouldnt get money from the hard working people.

I hope it passes.

Excellent. I wonder how the opposition will crop their reluctance to vote for this.

unfortunately this will not pass and if it some how does there will almost immediately be a lawsuit based on invasion of privacy just like there was when EI was getting the customs and border lists of people who crossed the border to extended periods and cut them off EI

It's about time this prov. Conservative party (or the other) got on the "crime doesn't pay" wagon/agenda. Do they not recognize people support right vs wrong? Or at the very least - a their own political jackpot? Nice to see they're finally coming out of the closet anyway (which hasn't had walls for at least 3 years).

Well I have called for this for years as a lawyer told me , it might not stand a constitutional challenge.

How can that be? They are wanted fugitives - we can give/send thrm money but not locate them otherwise? Then the Charter needs a re-write. That should be obvious to all by now.

Yes you should get the goverment right on it . And the libs were never in power to do this in this province. Welfare is a provincial thing after all , also people come to pick the money up at an ATM now , not at the office .
So locating is harder , course you can stop the cheque.
Welfare is not told you have been charged either or that you are wanted course that could change .

There used to be a cop stationed at the welfare office on Broadway (when it was on Broadway) that made the most arrests in the city.

When someone applied for welfare, they were checked and he made an arrest if there was an outstanding warrant.

WTF happened to this cop? Did they pull him as it was turning people away?

Heh. I though this was a Federal initiative. Oops...

As to those "charged" with a crime, I'd say they don't count. At least not until they are convicted.

All welfare should be cut, until the roads are repaired!

For those "privacy" proponents out there - reconcile this:
The police can check a system to see if you (a non-convict) owns a gun or not.
Our insurance/drvrs lic monopoly can check to see whether you've paid your photo-enforcement invoices and if not - withhold your license.
And you're making an argument that people with warrants should receive our free support chq's while they're on the lam from the law? And that the public interest should not have the power/right to cross-reference that? That is absurd. This would receive a 95% referendum vote.

Agreed!

However, "This would receive a 95% referendum vote" I'll add to that 'West of Ontario'

Ahhhh....if someone is wanted by the police and the welfare people know where they are, shouldn't they tell the police?

Shouldn't the police, perhaps, drop the cheque off personally? Wink
