I'm of two minds on this. While we make the car king that particular intersection has too much traffic from every direction and pedestrians would cause unbelievable problems and delays.

I remember that intersection before everyone was herded underground and I can tell ya at certain times of day that corner was plain old stupid.

Keep em underground during the day. Let em out in the evenings and on weekends and holidays.

okay this is just a little ridiculous
"The pedestrian has the right to live in urban or village centres tailored to the needs of human beings and not the needs of the motor car and to have the amenities within walking or cycling distance." "
and obviously something must be missing from the preamble or totallity of that text. Why? Because the above text makes the onus on the government to build "amenities withing walking or cycling distance" for every tom dick and harry no matter where they decide to live.
I hate it when people quote only parts of a story to be sensational.

its a horrid idea. unless of course we are going to create at least one more major route each way somewhere near that corner.

I always thought of the pedestrian underground as a very cool thing for Winnipeg. It's great to get out of the weather. I wish the underground connected with the Cennential Centre - Civic Complex - Civic Parkade one. And extend it to RRC.

I just wish the underground had better hours. or free parking or something maybe some decent bars attached make underground winnipeg downtown this uber cool place to be.

The underground will be attached to Shannon's Pub and E&C and BP's soon....

Maybe Val should park his ass out at Portage and Main one breezy January afternoon, then he would remember why pedestrians were sent underground. I have no idea what the fascination is to have pedestrian traffic at that intersection. There is no incredible scenery, no historic sites to see, the cold reality is that it is incredibly cold in the winter and there are a gazillion cars coming at you from 4 different directions. I used to work in Trizec and it was great as I could walk all the way down to the Y at lunch for a workout and never have to go outside.

Yes this intersection was nuts when people walked it , some people will never get over the old days . And Mcdonalds sucks
