CTV.ca News Staff

Winnipeg zoo officials euthanized the oldest living polar bear on Monday, after a clinical exam found Debby was suffering from multiple organ failure.

At 42 years old, Debby doubled the life expectancy of the average polar bear. Officials said her health had been declining for several months.

They said she spent her last moments surrounded by caring zoo-keepers and veterinarians.

That is just so sad. Sadder still, Winnipeg, Capital of Manitoba, home of the Polar Bear, does not have a single Polar Bear in its zoo. Are the same planners running the zoo as run the city?

Skipper left Debby some years ago...
At least, someone put a necrology in the online Freep Passages for them, they deserve it.

And I thought Canadians didn't believe in the death penalty?

First, they lock Debby up, only periodic conjugal visits, and then...just when it snows and she thinks she's at home again, they stick a needle in.

really nice guys...Sad

I would say that perhaps churchill is home of the polar bear and we have no good reason for actually having one in our zoo in such an unfit environment.

The entire bear enclosure needs major upgrades before any new bears can be brought in.

That I'd donate to.

Sell bear sponsorships.

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
That's why a bear can rest at ease
With just the bare necessities of life

You know. I think you are right. There is a mood world wide that suggests we need to begin protecting such species. We need to create an environment in our zoo that would be classified as the worlds greatest Polar Bear exhibit. Today not ten years from now.

Why not maintain an environment in their natural habitat?

My apologies. Didn't realize you were close. Personally, I barely knew her.
