Sunday I bought some Diet Pepsi on sale at WalMart.

6-pack of bottles.

Put it in the back of my vehicle and left it there till today (Tuesday)

Of course, with the sub-zero temperatures...they got cold...VERY cold...but something odd happened.

Here are some photos:
OK Science Geeks...have fun with this one... Pepsi210
OK Science Geeks...have fun with this one... Pepsi_10
OK Science Geeks...have fun with this one... Pepsi310

The photos are not touched up or edited in ANY way.

The bottles with the "whiter tops are frozen SOLID from top to bottom.
The bottles that are darker are not frozen at ALL...no slush, no sign of freezing in ANY way.

The pack was all sitting together, as seen in the photos.

All bottles are still sealed and new.

What I find most odd, is that a couple from one side are frozen, but only 1 on the other, and that not all of one side is frozen.

It makes me rule out sunlight contact, or any other "exposure" issues, as the only thing that was the same for all of them was that they were lying together in the back of my vehicle.

So...any theories? Why the odd freezing pattern? Why the discrepancy between the bottles and between each side?

I only had one, and that's that air may have gotten into the three that froze...but there should be indications of liquid being exchanged for air...and there's no leakage or marks of any kind.

Theorize away!!! Smile

actually.. if you open the "unfrozen" ones. they will freeze instantly. Its pretty damn cool to watch. especially as it expands quickly freezing and "shoots" frozen pepsi out.

yeah...i know about the "instafreeze" thing but that shouldn't be a factor here...the bottles are still sealed.

I've noticed a similar thing with diet drinks before.

BTW I drink diet drinks almost exclusively and I cannot stand diet Pepsi.

I prefer Diet Coke...but the Diet Pepsi was on sale for 1/2 price.

sometimes shaking them will set them off too

its because there is nothing for the ice crystals to form on. ie the bottle is "perfect"

I prefer diet pepsi over diet coke....the hubby drinks coke zero.

So...what's the reason that some froze and others didn't?

Does it have something to do with the freezing point of the ingredients and the manufacturing quality of the product?

It would seem not...it's the same product...though imperfections in the distribution could account for it...but I don't think they'd be THAT significant or they'd affect the taste too.

There has to be something that is different with the bottles. One right next to the other but with differing reactions.

yes... the bottle is different. Not every bottle coming off of a manufacturing line will be identical and its not every single one that will freeze like that.

it even depends on the angle of the bottle and the milimetre or two of extra or less liquid.

It could also be how they were situated and where in the trunk in relation to the outside barrier as well as the exhaust. For the outside barrier (quarter panel and trunk lid) would have to know what direction the car was facing when the sun/warmth of the day was at it strongest. As well did the stay in the same position for the whole time or did they roll around when you were driving? There are a lot of variables that could explain the freezing patterns that could also include the chemical values in each bottle.
I don't drink diet drinks because of the chemical sweetners in them (aspartame in particular) so don't know what the exact chemical make up these drinks. When I did drink soda it was Coke (until I found out there are almost 10 teaspoons of sugars in an 8 oz can) and 90 empty calories. When you are changing your lifestyle and eating habits like I did, this is oneof the first things to go.

Salt.
Three of the bottles contains more salt.
(What do I win???).

slight variations in the volume of the bottles. If some of the bottles are slightly dented in when the cap is screwed on, it would mean less space for the expansion of ice to occur. Just my theory.

Or, when a liquid turns to solid, is absorbs heat from the surrounding area. So each bottle that turned to ice prevented on of its neighbours from freezing....

The bottles are supersaturated with CO2 and under pressure, co2 freezes at -103.9 F. so when a liquid is supersaturated it will need lower temps to freeze, pressure is also a factor. When you release the pressure co2 immediately begins to disperse out of the liquid causing the liquid to fast freeze.

Its like Super said, The more Carbon Dioxide in the liquid the lower the freezing point. Release the CO2 and the freezing point rapidly moves back up the scale.

So....there seems to be a manufactured difference beteween the cans then?

Does the fact that they are being sold at half price make a difference?LOL

They forgot halve the chemicals that kept it from freezing

except that it happens with water bottles as well
