This man is quite controversial. David Chartrand said yesterday it was important to bring the poems home to Manitoba as Riel was the father of Manitoba.

That is a curious claim. How does Riel lay claim to that distinction? What exactly did Riel do that created the province resulting in his paternity?
Is this confirmed as I had not heard this been to busy to keep up on this story.
