It sounds like some poems of this late great Canadian who was finally exonerated , will go up for auction . Was wondering if we as a province should make an effort quietly to get these pieces as they are part of the father of Manitoba ,s life .
Our bidding to be done through a private consortium of bidders with a small amount of tax money given to help with the final bid , to secure them for Manitoba don't think Sask won't be there as they probably care more about it then we do. Even though they only housed him as a outlaw . This was where he worked and did some of his finest work for the betterment of Metis and Manitoba .

I'm torn on the notion of Louis Riel as the father of Manitoba.

Estimated 5K. value. Seems to me that would be a reasonable price to pay outright for them

That makes 2 of us. I look at him as more of a traitor and murderer.

They should be bought by the government of Manitoba or by some citizen of Manitoba and donated to the archives of Manitoba or to the museum of man and nature.

Even though the man was a traitor and a murderer, he is still a important figure in Manitoba's history.

There really is a limited interest in Riel as a significant historical persona, so 5 K sounds reasonable to me...we already have a museum to keep them don't we ?

I think the interest is cause hardly anyone understands what he was about or stood for , I am by no means an expert but have read some he was a fascinating character.

Yes, Gary, use some of that money you are wasting on "Spirited Energy" and your new attempt at branding Manitoba and put it to good use.

Seems the MMF paid $31k for these poems. Originally they were expected to fetch $5k.

This man is quite controversial. David Chartrand said yesterday it was important to bring the poems home to Manitoba as Riel was the father of Manitoba.

That is a curious claim. How does Riel lay claim to that distinction? What exactly did Riel do that created the province resulting in his paternity?

The delegates representing the provisional government departed for Ottawa in March. Although they initially met with legal difficulties arising from the execution of Scott, they were soon able to enter into direct talks with Macdonald and George-Étienne Cartier.[33] An agreement enshrining the demands in the list of rights was quickly reached, and this formed the basis for the Manitoba Act[34] of 12 May 1870, which formally admitted Manitoba into the Canadian confederation. However, the negotiators were unable to secure a general amnesty for the provisional government.

There once was a man named Riel
Whose living conditions were hell
He hung Thomas Scott,
Avoided getting shot,
and all that did Manitoba well.

Not sure if I would describe Riel as the "father" of Manitoba, but lets not downplay his importance in the creation of the Province.

Not to downplay the significance of the execution of Thomas Scott, the North West Rebellion of 1885 cost the lives of 9 members of the 90th Battalion of Winnipeg Rifles who are now known as the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. These sacrifice of these 9 Riflemen is commemorated at the Volunteer Monument located at the entrace of the Centennial Concert Hall as well as in the graveyard at St Johns Cathedral.

Good place to start would be the Regimental Museum of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles at Minto Armouries, 969 St Matthews. Ph786-4300
