Is it not at all possible for websites to have only advertising that will actually work in their local country?

Random people's websites.. meh.. whatever.

But websites for various media outlets? Cant they have someway of only accepting Canadian ads per se?

The Freep site seems to be the worst. Say... do these sites that advertise with them, that are not even accessible for Canadians, actually pay Canadian websites for using the ad?

Yes web owners get paid. Our site elansofas.com, has had several offers to carry small ads, related to the home products.
I don't remember how much they were offering for a one year contract.

yes...and no.

A website could sell space directly...meaning they get to choose who buys space, and what goes in that space.

or, they can put an advertising block in, which subscribes to google or yahoo etc. for advertising content.

websites can then "guide" what is advertised on them, based upon the content of the site.

So...saw we had advertising blocks on our page in the upper right corner...and there was this thread going...the advertising in the block up above might come back with ads for websites, hostings, webdesign, advertising, etc.
If the thread was about porn discussions though...the advertising might switch to a porn link instead.

There are a few exceptions though, porn, for example, requires the site to be listed as an "adult" site in its registry in order for porn ads to be allowed to be placed.

ahh so no such thing as region specific advertising and such?

or well I know there is such thing but in an area the size of Winnipeg not enough local businesses advertising online so the software just goes for outside ads to fill in gaps?\

again...based on content and keywords

our forum would generate mostly winnipeg or manitoba ads as well...because of our winnipeg-based content.

how much would be dependent upon who has ads running out there.

not really forum I am looking at..

I am annoyed by the ads on the Freep website that are actually impossible to use from Canada. I was wondering if targeting to specific area software existed and why someone would not use it.

i'm not sure which ads you're talking about.

I just went through about 20 pages on the Freep site, and all of them are usable from Winnipeg.

Called GeoTargetting ads. Scans IP address of visitor to deliver ads based on geographical location. And yes, if no ads are available for that set area, alternate ads are shown instead.

Is it possible for websites such as the Freep or other LOCAL news outlets to refuse outside ads?

Possible? Yes. They have the ability to refuse ads, refuse advertisers, refuse genre's, set specific guidelines for ads, run 100% local ads, ad type, ad size, ad format, ad action, almost anything they want.

Likely? No. Refusing ads, is refusing money. They will take virtually everything they can.

Though I do agree, the ads should be relevant to Winnipegers, as it is the WINNIPEG Free Press.

Yeah I just see something like a news site (anyone's not just the freep) as being above other sites and that they should strive a little harder
