Read an interesting tidbit in today's Sun. The "Today In History" column states that on this date, Jan 2, 1860 Urbain Le Verrier Announced the discovery of the planet Vulcan.

Thus beating Gene Roddenberry by 100+ years.

Happy New Year, every one.

Someone at the Sun needs to do better research...or else you paraphrased incorrectly.

He did NOT announce the DISCOVERY of the planet Vulcan, he announced the POSSIBILITY of a planet and named it Vulcan should it be found...it never was.

Gene Roddenberry actually used that name because of Verrier's naming.

Ironically though...the non-planet was speculated to be closer to the sun than Earth...which would have created beings weaker and probably smaller than humans...yet the Star Trek version has them typically stronger because of the size and gravity of Vulcan.

An interesting link though to the wikipedia item...interesting to know that a planet was discovered using just mathematics Smile.
