I'm not at all surprised. It is reflective of the salaries some members of the aboriginal social agencies were getting paid.

The Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation has uncovered some interesting info about council remuneration at Manitoba’s largest First Nation community. And it looks like Winnipeg’s City Council is quite a bargain in comparison.
City of Winnipeg
Population: 630,000
Annual budget: $788 million
Council structure: 1 Mayor, 15 Councillors
Total Council compensation: $1.14 million
Average Council compensation: $71,304
Peguis First Nation
Population: 7,200
Annual budget: $47 million
Council structure: 1 Chief, 4 Councillors
Total Council compensation: $1.26 million
Average Council compensation: $252,826

Per capita comparisson of budgets (Wpg - Pequis) - Pequis residents wins/benefit by a squeaker - only 527% more (per person). This should make taxpayers ANGRY.

Those salaries are all earned! You cannot just look at the totals, you have to look where they are located and the type of homes they are stuck with, and the abject poverty of the people around them, who aren't on the council!
This is worse than being stuck in the NorthEnd or on Wellington Crescent!
They need more money, better housing, and fresh foods, with a definite cutback of carbohydrates!

The way I see it. there are a great many people living in homes that once were modern and new, but years of neglect and maintenance by the people living in them, have made them run down. The Chief and council are grossly over paid, they could easily trim their salary back 50% and they still would have a better quality of life than I.
