A red lobster has banned their food prep people from wearing a poppy at work. Wouldn't it perhaps make more sense to enforece rules on how to properly wear a poppy so it will not fall off?

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2008/11/10/7360926-sun.html

As the article states that businesses have a right to not sell poppies or not allow their employees wear them.

We as Canadians also have the right to refuse to use or attend a restraunt as we see fit.

Would you support not going to Red Lobster the day bfore, the day of and the day after remembrance day as a way of showing the company they need to rethink their policy?

I'll support that...though I probably wasn't going anyway Wink

LOL.. well me either. And it is only one Red Lobster in Calgary... but if the sales across the country dropped for 3 days the other businesses might just have something to say to Mr manager in Calgary.
I just dont know enough people that would go to Red Lobster to make a differnce though.

I love Red Lobster...just can't afford $80 dinners (what it ads up to with 3 of us).

I will agree with Red Lobster though about the whole "food prep" workers not wearing them.

People LOSE those poppies all the time (heck, the one I'm wearing today I found on the ground yesterday).

I would take it one step further. Phone your local Red Lobster and tell them that due to their Calgary manager's insensitivity you will no longer visit their location. Gotta create significant noise so that Calgary moron understands the implications of his actions.

Sorry...didn't get to finish my post.

When it comes to food prep...I don't know that I want people preparing my food wearing something that is prone to fall off, and thus risk having a needle being found by the daughter when she's gobbling up her food.

I think if I was the manager of the Red Lobster though, I'd try to provide an alternative method...like issuing safety pins instead of straight-pins, or having some made with magnetic backs instead of the pins.

I'm sure he was thinking more about the lawsuit from someone finding a needle through their throat, rather than protesting the wearing of the poppies.

Imagine workers at Weston bakeries wearing poppies at work.
Imagine one falling in to the dough.
Imagine your wife buying a loaf of wonder bread and making your child a sandwich.
Imagine the pin from the poppy in your kids sandwich bread.
Imagine the shriek from your child as they bite in to the sandwich and the pin pokes through your kids tongue.

Don't wear such items in food preparation industries, it is common sense.

Bad argument...there's no such thing.

But it is reasonable to ban the pins (I don't think the poppies themselves pose a real threat)

It's the same reasons food prep industries can ban wearing jewelry and loose-fitting clothing...to reduce the risks.

exactly. simply come up with a different way to secure them. No need to stick to the pins.

They also ban nail polish....I remember being a teen and working at A&W, they told me I couldn't wear nail polish or fake nails...

that one does to me...nail polish has chemicals, which can react with certain types of oils, cleaners & food acids.

yeah except for the fact you are supposed to wear gloves when handling food.

And nail polish chips....and not everyone wears gloves when preparing food. Go into a fast food restaurant and tell me how many people you see wearing gloves. Hell, go to Taco Time in the mall and tell me if the person making your taco is wearing gloves? The last time I was there they weren't.

I always wondered why the girls at Subway looked funny, must be the beard nets.

The girls at the Subways I frequent don't wear the beard nets. Now that you mention it perhaps they should.

I have eaten at the Red Lobster, and I think a poppy in the food would improve the taste!
