sattelite paid parking?

Winnipeg is trying out a Sattelite paid parking expirement right now. Ie. You purchase for about $100 a little transponder thingy.
You put it in your car. And no matter what city parking spot you go to, you are automatically charged accordingly based on when you arrive and when you leave.

Who would use this? would you use this?

depends on how accurate it is...ie. to a minute, to an hour, etc.

Currently, if I park in a city spot, put $2 in the machine, and leave after 20 minutes...do I get money back? No.

Plus...would it allow more than 2-hour parking? even in designated 2-hour parking areas? ie. could I park all day and just have it keep running my bill? or would it automatically issue me a ticket after the 2-hours?

Also, would it be accurate enough to turn itself off if I park on a Sunday when it's free to park anyway?

The only concern I'd have would be the same as the camera lights...that it would develop into a "cash" grab by allowing the city to implement a technological way of charging people to park at their own home.

so to answer the question on... park in a city spot and put $2 and then leave. how many times in a day would you do that? would 25 cents in the machine not be sufficient? or do you just not know how long you would be there?

as to accurate to turn itself off... I would assume this would be something that you would just talk to the city about if a bill came and it was messed up.

automatic parking ticket.... heh.. that was my first take as well. INSTANT ticket...and you dont even get to fight it, its just added to the credit card billing at the end of every month.

i don't pay for parking much anyway...have no reason to...but that would be another question.

If i paid $100 and got the transponder...then would I have $100 worth of parking available indefinitely? ie. would I basically be able to park downtown in my vehicle "for life".

I don't mind the INSTANT ticket thing...they have actual meters which issue INSTANT tickets in Miami & Los Angeles. Takes a photo of the license plate and mails the ticket out. They should have those on Portage now during the 3:30-5:30 rush when there's NO STOPPING along Portage.

from the sounds of it... NO... that $100 is for the pleasure of buying the neccessary equipment.

I cant even see couriers using this most of them seldom pay for parking as it is.
