10.16.09 Conservatives Flirt with Majority as Ignatieff Momentum Plummets
The start of the fall season finds the governing Conservative Party with its biggest advantage since the October 2008 election that resulted in a second minority mandate, according to the Canadian Political Pulse, conducted by Angus Reid Strategies in partnership with the Toronto Star.
The online survey of a representative national sample of 1,003 adults finds that the views of Canadians on Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff have worsened since the summer, and sees the official opposition party losing ground in the seat-rich provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

In order for there to be an election, does there have to be a vote of non confidence? Or can the conservatives call an election if they want to?

heh.. we already no that answer to that one.

They could call one for sure. However, at this time if they did call one when no one is sabre rattling, they would loose big time.

They could ask the GG to dissolve parliament any time they want to, but it helps if they have a decent excuse. The GG in theory has the option of refusing or asking the other parties if they can come together to form a government. This is unlikely, but becomes more slightly likely if the government wants parliament dissolved for no reason at all.

More likely is that the government will try to engineer a defeat by putting forth a bill that is impossible for the opposition parties to support, and declaring it a confidence vote.

I find it hard to believe that the Liberals would contribute to a fall of government at this time, and the foreseeable future for that matter. Their numbers are far too low.

I hope Harper takes full advantage of this and brings up a number of changes...I love to see the Liberanos squirm. Wink

It would have to be something really really really bad for the Liberals to not give just enough votes to prop them up. AND such a thing would be bad enough that the cons would loose badly during the election.
