Low paying, entry level jobs at the Federal Government pay 25k to 35k with full benefits including sick days. Pay increases come frequently and with in a year or 2 they will be making more than I do. With a good grasp of budgeting there is no way a person with a federal job should be 2 months behind in rent. And in no way they should be using a food bank.

Lets talk about unions now, Unionized employee's who go on strike get no sympathy from me. They might have 100 years ago when 10 year old boys were employed to mine coal in the UK, but in this day and age TOO BAD!

WOw, what crap!! If you don't agree with what this woman did, thats one thing, but to go on a tirade to that extent is something else.

Who drinks on Sunday?? Well, I must be an alcoholic too, but I just don't have time for the meetings.

Solution for the disenchanted....don't read Sinclair's column, I don't.

Sunday morning is the newspaper's way of saying Saturday night after midnight.... and I see no problem drinking at that time.

Is it considered bad form if you are STILL drinking sunday afternoon from late Friday night? or is that okay?

I think the point here is that she JUST got the money to pay her back rent and she was already drinking the next day. regardless of Sunday morning the day does not matter. Its the fact that she was drinking immediatly after and it was donated money.

2 things that anger me:
1) great role model for a 12 year old to leave her alone over night while mom is off getting drunk.

2) she has now potentially ruined any chance of this type of compassion to happen again from generous and giving (gullible maybe????????) Winnipeggers because of the old "cry wolf" syndrome for someone who may be in real need of help.
She has just taught her daughter how to 'screw the system' so to speak.
Good job, but karma is a bitch. What goes around comes around, so watch out, it will be coming back at you at about 6000 times worth so I hope it was worth the hurt she put on everyone.

It looks like she is a scammer...but whatever...I wouldn't have given her a dime.

I would not say she was a scammer in my opinion. Just looks real bad is all. I dont think the people who donated expected the money to go to drinking.... BUT with that said, they willingly gave her the money did they attach strings? nope...but I bet the next hard luck story from Gordon gets less money if any.

And quite frankly if for 2 months you were concerned about getting your rent paid and eating.. and you finally got that monkey off your back, would you celebrate? I know I would.

The optics really suck. I don't imagine this woman is a rocket surgeon. She likely did not expect to be under a microscope. But she did not use good judgement. She ought to have been more judicious with how she spent the money and more discrete when she went drinking.

This is much ado about nothing. Perhaps someone has an agenda and it is being played out through the blogosphere and spaces such as the sandbox.

Well, believe it or not, i agree with you. I think unions have done a lot to tame the harsh and deadly tendancies of the capitalist state.
However, many employers these days have recognize this and have incorporated company policies that have done this without the help of unions.. so..

I'm not sure what the big deal is. She gave a sob story to Sinclair, so what. I never sent her any money, but then again, I never made a deal with the son of the late Nigerian Finance minister to get his money out of the country either.

People helped her out, and that is great for the people who could and for her who obviously needed a helping hand!

So the negative nannies are complaining about what? My God, the complainers are bitter about her spending some of the money!
SHAME! let her alone!

I saw her downtown going into an investment firm to put the money into the stockmarket, and I insisted that she spend the money, rather invest it! She has never had any money left over in all her life!
Crabby , horrible complainers!
baby at 14, and we all know that social services are there to help her out of her life sentence of poverty! lol

Funny how once people would have had to much pride to do this just to admit you were to hard up was something most frowned at. Cept to family course she probaly burned those connections too.

I'm of the opinion that once people give money to help someone than that person can do whatever they want with the money. If they blow it, then I guess they burnt their bridges. I don't beleive in giving with strings attached. Once money leaves my hands, its' no longer my problem or business what happens to it.

Well not really.. I don't consider paying taxes freely giving. If I voluntarily want to help someone out, well that is different. I hate giving with strings attached.

In the world of charities, "donations" are referred to as "gifts". Its also the term that CRA uses. When you make a gift, its unconditional, thats what makes it a gift. If you're unhappy with the decision that the recipent makes, then maybe you shouldn't have made the gift in the first place, or you should do some research so you have the confidence that the recipient will make the "right" choices.
