WINNIPEG -- A former finance minister with a reputation for being deeply principled was chosen Saturday to become the next premier of Manitoba.

Greg Selinger beat out his lone rival to claim the leadership of the province's NDP at a convention in Winnipeg on the first ballot, earning the right to replace Manitoba's popular outgoing premier, Gary Doer.

Delegates had a choice between Selinger's perceived reliability and the more daring campaign waged by Steve Ashton, and overwhelmingly chose the 58-year-old Selinger.

Greg Selinger will become Manitoba's next premier after he won the support of delegates at an NDP leadership convention Saturday afternoon.

Selinger was finance minister under Gary Doer, who announced in late August that he's stepping down after serving as Manitoba premier for more than 10 years.

An NDP party official told the crowd of delegates at the Winnipeg Convention Centre that Selinger won 1317 of 2002 ballots cast by delegates, while Ashton won 685. There was one spoiled ballot.

Damn, I was hoping for Ashton.

Oh well. Ashton would have made it easy to move the NDP to that of the opposition.

Those are hairy creatures with big horns that you name hockey teams after or things you hang around your neck when you are feeling mad and want to end it all.

Selinger, next Premier???
Ain't it supposed to be decided by an election???
Once Doer steps down, don't y'all go voting for the new Premier???

If only it were so.

The Leader of the party becomes Premier automatically.
