Liberal MP Coderre quits as Quebec lieutenant

Mon Sep 28, 9:42 PM

OTTAWA (CBC) - Longtime Liberal MP Denis Coderre has resigned as the party's Quebec lieutenant and defence critic, blaming unnamed "advisers from Toronto" for interfering with his home province's affairs.
Coderre said he no longer has the "moral authority" to act as leader Michael Ignatieff's right-hand man in Quebec, after being overruled in choosing the Liberal candidate for the Montreal riding of Outremont.

"I have a lot of respect for Michael, but I think that he will need to make some changes around him," Coderre told a news conference in his Montreal North riding of Bourassa.
Ignatieff initially supported Coderre's call to nominate business executive Nathalie Le Prohon instead, as part of the Liberal strategy to increase the number of women in its Quebec caucus.

But late last week Ignatieff did an about-face, announcing the party would clear the way for Cauchon's nomination.

"Much more fundamental questions are raised by these events: Who should the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada listen to on decisions that strictly affect Quebec?" Coderre asked.

"Should he follow his Quebec lieutenant while working closely with a credible team? Or his Toronto advisers who know nothing about the social and political realities of Quebec?"

Harper's strategists must be grinning ear to ear. I wonder when the torys will so something that will force the liberals/NDP/bloc to vote in non-cofindence. If the tory's play their cards right we may see a tory majority sooner than later.
I wonder if Iggy will do to the liberals what happend to Kim Campbel's PC's?

I think Iggy just shot himself in both feet. Imo, it was just a matter of time before something like this happened. Iggy has zero political sense.

Considering his arrogance, its hard to believe that Iggy listens to anyone.

Man that party is incompetent. You get into a public internal argument while at the same time putting forward a non-confidence motion (not that it's going to pass)? And what's with the Toronto bashing? Unless this guy is planning to switch to the Bloc or provincial politics this is an amazingly stupid move.

Absolutely no political sense at all.

Dean. Many of those Liberal votes will just not show up on election day....they'll just stay home.

That's probably a reason our turn-outs are so low...at least one of them.

Quebecois voters have a quirky habit of voting for the other guy, in protest. Who knows the vote may go to the Bloc or it may go to the Tory's or even (i shudder to say it) NDP
