Did Ashton state that one of his leadership election platform pledges is to substanially increase welfare by as much as $13,000 to individual recipients ($13,000 being the amount of increase, not bringing the total to)?

Find a link.....that sounds ridiculous and unfeasible if true.

Ashton lays out veritable potpourri of socialist policy

Winnipeg Sun

Yesterday alone, Ashton announced more substantive policy ideas in one day than we've heard from his two opponents combined since the beginning of the race.
Ashton says he would jack up welfare rates for all recipients to ensure they can meet the true cost of living.
Major shift In some cases, that would mean increasing annual welfare payments by $13,000 for single, employable recipients. It would be a major policy shift for government.
Ashton also pledged no one living with a serious disability would live in poverty. For a single individual in Winnipeg, that would mean government would have to ensure everyone with a serious disability was getting no less than $18,000 a year -- the so-called poverty line.
Ashton would build 1,500 new subsidized housing units over five years. He would expand affirmative action programs. He'd bring back the tuition freeze and ensure every high school kid could get a summer job.
It's a veritable potpourri of socialist policy -- something his opponents have steered very clear of.

Oooo. Scary boys and girls. If Ashton gets elected we may well wish for the days of Evil Doer. Time for people to get more engaged in the election process.

Holy sh1t, if this is true, get some of whatever Ashton is smoking for the rest of us.

Do these socialist fools understand that there's an entire class of people that leave for work at 6am to earn little more than the subsection who have never had a job and don't plan on getting one? This province will see a mass-exodus before the working-class absorb's this backwards logic with increased "cheques". Welfare should be like unemployment - there when you need it - for a term. Damnit, if EI was endless then I'd probably still be on it since the one and only time I received in the 1980's. Just tell a stupid 18 year old that he/she can get a monthly cheque for sleeping in every day and doing nothing for as long as they want - and that they'll get substanially more money with each child that they produce - and what the hell do you think they'll do? Look for an NDP defeat next election. I say that becasue over the next two years - Manitoba will by then stand out like a sore-thumb compared to neighbouring provinces. That's already happening but the divide will become even more pathetic. This social experiment of dependence will reveal it's sickness when the following occurs - near 50% of the people will still vote in support of the NDP and agree with their demand for more funding. At that stage, these dependents will have a socialogical name applied to them - something ending in "itis". The real crime is in spreading this disease - and I hold the Ashton types fully responsible.

I agree with the serious disability part mostly as some people end up in some pretty bad situations because of their impairment HOWEVER, what constitutes a serious disability? ADHD? ADD? FASD? if so, we would be seriously screwed supporting all these disabilities?

Just physical? Even then, what if it was self inflicted just to get more payments? ( and yes people would do that )

I understand that in his next major announcement, Ashhead will announce that, if elected, he will not raise taxes.

edit: elected should be annointed.

yeah could be true... just go into massive massive massive debt so that once we start splitting apart at the seams the next guy will have to come in and raise taxes.

damn it we really have to change our electoral system where WE dont even get to vote for our leaders.

Imho, whenever the Premier resigns or otherwise leaves office, there should automatically be a general election. That's only fair.

Case in point, what if a few hundred people, (for that's all it takes) actually annoint Ashhead and he goes anhead with those increases?

Yeah one month for their party to find a new leader and one month later for the election. AND the bill for the election goes to the member leaving office unless it is for medical or other family responsibilities.

Cant stand these politicians who cost us money by switching jobs midstream.

For those of us who eschew the system this could be good news in the long term but I stand by what I have said to others who know me personally in that I would rely upon it only under dire circumstances....the system is very degrading and I have found that folks I know who have had to use it because of disabilities have been treated quite badly whereas chronic users/abusers of social security systems seems to just sail along nicely.....gee, I wonder why or is it because they are children who need big brother to care for them?

Ashton can promise all the monies he likes....until the disbursement system becomes equal and human I will never trust nor rely upon it.

It is very frustrating when some hack behind a desk tells you that you look "just fine" and are exaggerating your symptoms.....and then they tell you to do telemarketing from your home or some other joe job and here you have a masters degree or two under your belt and you are left scratching your head thinking WTF???? It is no small wonder some of us would rather slog it out on our own with the added stresses of contracting worries and making our bill payments than have to deal with some dumbass with job security who does not even possess half the education we have and think that they know our pain issues or mental health status as a result of dealing with those issues.....and yet some get a free ride for life because they are "oppressed".

But... If you cannot work a "day" job but can work a telemarketing job (masters or no) shouldn't you? Seriously, working at something must be better than not working at all.

No free rides eh?

Walk a mile in the shoes of those who have disability issues and perhaps you would change your tune. Degradation should never be part of an aid package. It is so difficult to boil all of this down into a neat little package to be sure.....what pisses me off are those who are able to receive assistance simply because of historical imperative and not physical needs.....and those who really need assistance are treated like garbage and demeaned.

That is not right.

How is working for a living degrading?

Look at all the immigrants that arrive on our shores with advanced degrees. They can't get work as engineers and doctors but will drive a cab until they can get work they were trained for.

Let's separate the issues though. It'll make for a more meaningful discussion.

We are discussing disability payments not how degrading working for a living is.....the issue of disability support is very important to those of us who may need it down the road but for now will avoid it like the plague due to the way it is handled.

As to hellfare roles? Get those off of it who are not disabled. Get those off of it who are eligible for post-secondary education and/or trades training.....stop punishing those who are working towards independence and stop rewarding those who abuse the system.

You can get paid money to breed now?

Why didn't anyone tell me...I'm married, 28, no kids...you mean I could get cash in the mail for fathering children.....with my wife? Neat!

And all along, here I was thinking that children would end up draining my bank account!
