ok, haven't had sushi in several years in winnipeg, but looking for a nice sushi night out, not intending to break the bank, but want decent food, service and whatnot, where to go?

Pretty extensive list of reviews:

http://www.winnipegsushi.com/

I personally love the value of Yuki Sushi, but it can be a long wait and it's pretty kitschy in terms of locale (McLaren Hotel). It's my go-to sushi joint. I've heard Blufish is fantastic, on the high end, and that Dae Gill is another good bang for your buck kind of place.

I agree Dae Gill is pretty good and not that pricey.

Ushi Sushi (I think is the name) on St. James is pretty good. (next to XSCargo by the Brick)

Very inexpensive...with good portions and service.

Very small place though (only about 20 seats), so try to target a non-prime time to eat.

Edohei is the best, by far, but it'll cost ya (Ohno-san). Yujiro is also very good (Masa-san). The trick is to go to the Japanese owned restaurants, as they are the best quality.

Didn't the guy at Edohei train and teach most of the other sushi chefs in this city? I believe so.

Yes. That's correct. Even Masa-san (former owner of Masa, current owner of Yujiro) used to work for Ohno many years ago.

I thought that the original Edohei chef left. Maybe not. I keep meaning to to check it out. I still like the sushimi quality at Meiji on Osborne. I generally wasn't a fan of the fish quality at Masa but used to go to it because it was cheap. Haven't tried Yujiro but heard it was good.

I don't have a favorite, not a big sushi fan. I prefer dim sum to sushi.

Is there a place someone could recommend that would change my opinion of sushi?

I was talking Masa like over 10 years ago, before Masa-san sold it off.

Meiji is not bad, it's acceptable, I suppose.

I'm having Dim Sum tomorrow. Greasy or no it is the very bestest food in all the world.

How are steamed dumplings greasy? Dim Sum is amazing. Kum Koon is the best in Winnipeg. I went to an awesome place in Vancouver, it was right by the Burrard station....the name escapes me.

Speaking of greasssy I have yet to see the TP Boys movie...

I had Dim Sum at the harbour building in VC. It was...ok. I've had it in Ottawa, it was... ok. I've had it in Winnipeg in China town and it was greasssssy and sick.

Sushi > Dim Sum

I've had dim sum in Ottawa and it was crap. Even my sister in law who is Chinese doesn't like dim sum in Ottawa.

The first time I had sushi was in California in the 80's. Then again in Vancouver in the 80's....never really cared for it. I find most Japanese food lacks spice, I find it very bland. Wasabi is okay...I prefer the chili sauce at Dim Sum.

Just noticed, Edohei has a new website that was created by one of it's servers, an artist named Takashi:
http://www.edohei.mb.ca/gallery.html

mmmm looks good I can't wait to eat there while I'm in town for Christmas.

His personal (artwork) site:

Mr. Ono of Edohei is an amazing sushi chef. That restaurant was one of the first real sushi bar/Japanese joints in town. Ichi ban was more for show but their half price sushi Mondays were decent.
