Five rail crossing accidents in the last two weeks, including one fatality and one DUI. What the hell are people thinking? If flashing lights, bells and whistles don't tell you enough then you should not be behind the wheel. Quite a few times I've seen idiots dart around the crossing arms to beat the train.....like the engineer said on CKY news, you can only dodge the train so long till it catches you.

I'am a conductor and you would not believe the morons we see from the train. It seems at the sight of a train some peoples brains shut off. I was told when I hired on that during a full career on the railroad I would probably kill at least a couple of people. I haven't hit anyone yet but have come within inches twice and I only worked for 8 months before getting laid off!

I heard its actually because of all the layoffs the train engineers are on purpose steering the trains into people so that they can claim stress leave and their buddies will be called back to work from the layoff.

Oh the story's I could tell you guys. I've seen alot of dumb people do some incredible dumb things some survived many did not.

Chilliwack, BC. CN's main line run straight through the town. Track speed is 55/75 through town. lots of people love to go around the gates, then the train hits em. Its not a pleasant sight.

On the other hand....

After a train went through this morning, at around 7:40am, across Marion at Archibald the arms did not fully raise and the lights and bells stayed on. Imagine what that did to traffic.

Why are these fricking things allowed to frick up traffic at rush hour?

Completely fricked up traffic BIG time.

More underpasses on key arterial routes would help, but not likely to happen in Winnipeg.

Great Idea! But wait, nah, that'll never happen, just install traffic lights instead. (*I still have to buy my stock*)

I can't fault you for wanting a coffee, but when you stop on the lines parallel to Archibald, couldn't you stop a few meters BEFORE the gate/light trigger? Why stop traffic?

"Some" conductors are just dickheads for doing that.

I'm not sure on the "rules" for trains operating inside the city, but my Uncle works on the lines for one of them, and he was saying something along the lines of "trains are not allowed to stop at an intersection inside the city during rush our for more than 15-20 minutes"

This is second hand info, and I could have gotten some of the details mixed up, perhaps there is someone in the know who could confirm or clarify?

That's the Emerson Sub and I've never been on a crew that stops over that crossing. But some conductors are just arrogant dickheads. I'm the junior guy on the crew and I have no say on where we stop. I'm the guy running for the coffee!

The actual rule is you can't sit completely still on any crossing for more than 5 minutes. So if you need to block a crossing for a longer amount of time most conductors will have the engineer move the train forward or back a foot or so, to reset the clock. It's a stupid loophole but almost everyone uses it.

Most of the time when a train is stopped over a crossing for a long time, it's usually not just for the hell of it. It's usually a stuck or frozen or snowed in switch that has to be un-stuck by the lucky junior conductor.

I was told once by the police that as long as the train is "working" it can pretty much do as it pleases. The cops won't do anything.

But I can't imagine that if "they" get enough complaint calls, something won't get changed.

Personally, I think that the trains should work around traffic schedules....no holding up traffic during rush hours. Period.

personally i think trains should be routed around the "city proper"...or else where that's not possible, elevated roads or rails should be installed.

From the pictures I've seen of "old winnipeg", the cp rail by Logan was outside the city when it was put in. it brought things to the area, which were offloaded and delivered by truck/wagon.

As the city expanded, it should have planned for that, and moved the "hub" to the outskirts of the perimeter...thus creating a new "hub" for trucks to service the city.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if they do have to sit on a crossing at grade, they have to set hand brakes and cut the consist so trafick can cross.
