Here in Transcona is a convenience type store that has me puzzled. Due to the stricter laws regarding display of cigarettes the owner has a small room boxed off from the rest of the store where he sells his cigarettes, the large sign on the door clearly says only people over 18 are allowed in there, thats all fine and dandy,np there. But what has me baffled is in the store he has a glass display case and part of the rear wall dedicated to marijuana/ hashish smokers, pipes, glass bottles with inhaling straws, all manner of things drug related on display.Kids are always in and out of the store buying candy etc and can see all this on display. What exactly is the law here? Shouldn't this stuff be behind the door in the cigarette room?
I'm by no means a prude, smoked my share of pot myself in my younger days, but my opinion is it shouldn't be so openly displayed. Opinions anyone?

My guess is there is no law against such displays. The guy is doing what he is allowed to do. Personally I've no problem with weed. It is no more dangerous than alcohol IMHO.

From a purely moral POV the guy should remove the display so children are not exposed to it.

it's probably not illegal to display those items. there was a store in WEM(west edmonton mall) that was devoted to selling stuff like that.

the kicker is.. thats not drug paraphanlia until such time as someone puts their own drugs in it.
Could be used to smoke all sorts of plants most of which are not illegal.

Head shops are not illegal. There are many such head shops around Winnipeg.

In the USA the laws vary from state to state. Ask Tommy Chong about the US laws.

LD, I have nothing against headshops at all, they serve their purpose........as long as they are specificly headshops and not mixing kids with the paraphernalia. I just feel it should be outta sight in convenience types of stores, just like cigarettes. I've never gone into these headshops or the hydroponics places.....are kids allowed in there?

The Harper Conservaives all believe that Canadians should be switching to marihuana, because it is a safer smoke than cigarettes, which we all know cause cancer!
All smoking pot causes is a sore throat, and as such would be a great saving to the medical costs of Canada, so as a cost saving to the problem of runaway medical expenses, any Candian who switches from cigarttes to pot, will receive a $500 tax allowance!

Yes, no one is turned away from a head shop. as many of them also sell rock t-shirts, flags, rock-n-roll paraphernalia.

Now that I am older with children, I can see that maybe stores could put dope paraphernalia behind curtains. But then I think who takes their 6 year old's into head shops or tobacconist shops. Maybe parents should use some common sense.

I know the first time I ever ventured into a shop selling porno mags and drug paraphernalia was when I was 14. My friends and I use to go downtown to play video games in arcades. We would stop in Dominion News, Records on wheels, mothers, Old Calcutta, Goofy's Bizarre. Then we would hit the arcades. KK Ent. circus circus, DR. Q's, Mothers, Long johns. Seeing the drug paraphernalia did not make me smoke pot. It was friends in high school that introduced me to drugs, not the head shops.

...How many cig and pot smokers do you know that are over 80?
Right, they're all long gone...
Or should I say "lung" gone...

For the most part almost any man over 81 smoked. The government addicted them to cigarettes during WWII to ensure they ate less and had better nerves.

...and to keep them awake while on watch.

Do you know why the lighter was invented? So that each soldier could light his own smokes. Ever hear the expression never light a third (smoke) off a match? Passing a lit match down the line to light up, soldiers would give away their position, so the third one would easily get picked off by the enemy.
