Interesting.

I don't consider race and gender when voting per se. If two candidates are worthy I don't believe race or gender would sway me.

I wonder if other (most?) Manitobans vote according to race and gender...

oh come on...
i don't care how "open-minded" ANYONE thinks they are...EVERYONE has some kind of racism & sexism in them.

And it follows them to the polls.

Now many people will use logic and reason to overcome some things...but there is ALWAYS the initial perception...it's just human nature.

Isn't blaming things on "human nature" just a way of mitigating our own laziness....especially where it comes to brain functions?

".EVERYONE has some kind of racism & sexism in them"

I am inclined to find females more attractive then males.

No...human nature is just a natural progression of biological function.

It's also an argument brought on by GENERATIONS:
Nature vs. Nurture

What is natural, what is "learned"

It's the fundamental difference between humans and other animals, between the sexes, between the races.

The BEST way to learn the "nature" parts, is to watch children.
The largest percentage of what they do, when they aren't being told what to do, is purely natural.
They judge others, they ask questions, they fight, they cry, they eat, they sleep.

Anyone watch a 3-year-old who's tired? They just curl up on the floor and go to sleep
Anyone watch a 4-year-old who's angry? they throw things and have a fit
Anyone been in a checkout line with a 3-year-old...and someone of a different race comes in line behind you and that 3-year-old says to them..."why are you black?"

THAT is "nature".

The reason they don't (usually) do that as they get older...is they are TAUGHT it is impolite...wrong...they are taught (nurtured) into believing different things.

It applies to most everything.

Anyone ever see a 1-year-old get on their knees and pray to God?
So why do 4-year-olds do it after being in Sunday School for 2 years?

And Dean...you can wave off your "humanity" all you want...but I've seen your reactions to photos of women in bikinis, and your comments about how ugly someone is, and your comments about native issues...and ALL of those are based upon a judgment of what YOU believe is beautiful, ugly, a problem. It's also the reason you like Big Macs, and other people wretch at the thought of eating one...welcome to the Human Race.

That is not natural at all, kids who had some parental guidance will not do that. It's the spoiled brat phenomenon that has emerged as "natural" in the last two decades or so.

You really raised an issue that has not been resolved at all - whether people are anything by nature or are a result or parenting, education, and other influences. We really don't know if humans are born naturally "good" and then corrupted by society into criminals, or if they are born "evil" and morale and the ability to tell good from bad is an educated trait, or if they are born as blanks and then filled with impressions.

Never said it was resolved...in fact just the opposite.

it was only a couple years ago that Ice-T was speaking at (U of M or U of W)...and he made a comment that all kids are born evil, and that it is the duty of society to teach kids OUT of the evil.

Raised a huge discussion, and lots of psychobabble.

There would be only ONE way of proving one way or another...but that would be cruel and unreasonable.
