"A young man who interrupted a woman as she savagely attacked a months-old child this morning says the baby was so badly injured he couldn't tell if it had a face.
Tyler Bilsborrow spotted the woman when he stepped out for a smoke outside his Winnipeg home around 4:30 a.m. today.
Bilsborrow thought the woman was beating a cat but when he approached the woman staggered off and he realized it was a baby, who was covered in blood, screaming and gasping for air.
"She had the baby's face like this and she was smashing it into the concrete (sidewalk)," Bilsborrow said, motioning to demonstrate how the woman's hands were wrapped around the baby's neck.
He said it appeared the child was a girl and about six or seven months old.
Police said the baby is in guarded condition in hospital, where medical staff are monitoring the child closely.
“The individual may not be out of the woods. Medical personnel are still very concerned for the outcome,” said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.
The incident happened on Chudley Street, just south of Tyndall Avenue, across from a housing development in Gilbert Park.
The woman was later arrested nearby, area residents said.
Police would not confirm the arrest or any details about the child, including its gender or age.
Bilsborrow, the father of a one-year-old girl, wrapped the baby in his hoodie, called 911 on his cellphone, and comforted the child until police and paramedics arrived.
Bilsborrow said he also removed some kind of cord or string wrapped around the baby's neck.
He believes the woman was intoxicated.
He didn't try to stop her when she fled because his concern was the baby's well-being.
"She just ran off crying. She didn't say anything," Bilsborrow said.
He said he didn't recognize the woman. He assumes she is the child's mom or caregiver.
The incident sickened Bilsborrow's mom and neighbours.
"I don't know how she could do that. It was a human life," said Pearl Bilsborrow. "She should have her head smacked in the way she did that baby. What could (a baby) honestly do to deserve such a licking?"
Detectives in the child abuse unit are investigating."
Could someone please tell me why there is no death penalty for pieces of sh1t like this one? What use does it serve to anyone to allow something like this to waste another air molecule. I'm all for public stoning's in cases such as this.
F'em toss em in a wood chipper for all I care. This kind of crap makes me sick to my stomache.
