I am a little concerned about my sons usage on the internet.

For those of you that dont know, or dont remember, one of my sons is delayed developmentally and this can cause a variety of problems that make life more then a little trying. But this coupled with puberty/being a teenager is really causing some concern lately.

He has this girl in Ontario that he chats with on facebook or something all the time. Last night we were at anbother sons hockey game and the older son was freaking out because he had to be at home to be on the computer. It got so bad that he once again threatened to kill himself ( only about the 3000th time in his life ). But the threats like that had mostly gone away in the last few months and stuff.

Anyhooo... to make a long story short.. anyone know of a good keystroke logger that I can install to check he typing away for any further threats of suicide or running away ala the teenager in ontario?

Dean,
Having dealt with this with my brother for my father (since he knows nothing about computers)

Not the suicide thing, but the obsession part.

My personal recommendation is to turn off the computer for (a week). Randomly so your son can't warn "whoever" about the turnoff. Just take the computer one day and put it "away" (in a closet or something).

The complaints will come for a couple of days, the crying, the whining, etc. But it gives you the opportunity to sit down with your son and discuss what he does on the computer...who he's chatting with, what his interests are etc.

You said the other son plays hockey...does this one have other interests? something that can be targeted to develop more? Is he looking for other things to do?

I can recommend a great club for young men (12-21 years) that will help develop their self-esteem and have done great things for creating some of the best leaders in society.

My brother was addicted to porn sites...the internet history I would search would have hundreds of them listed. When I showed my dad what was going on...his first reaction was he wanted to throw my brother through a wall. After he calmed down, we locked the computer up with passwords so my brother couldn't use it anymore. We blocked several sites from being used. And at some point my dad pulled him aside and talked to him...which...according to both my dad & brother is what really fixed things.

Just my recommendation, having seen similar problems.

Incidentally, if he's using facebook, you can always get the information. If he's using a messenger program (yahoo, AIM, MSN), when installing them, they default to "log" anything that's transmitted. Unless he's turned the logs off...you can easily see what he's been chatting on these by opening the logs.

oh the passwords are there and such and he has lost the computer for a week now. he has ADD, ADHD, ACD, and slight Autism.. so no matter what the discussion it never helps Sad

The computer and accessing the facebook for chatting was actually one of the reasons he has "calmed down" lately.. very hard to take that away.

I will check his chat program for built in logging software.. Thanks!
