Another retailer, this one an 80 year old one, has closed, in the middle of its closing out sale!
The Bank shut down the operations last week, leaving some purchasers wondering if they will get their merchandise.
If you bought using your credit card, the credit card company will refund your purchase, if you havem't got your purchase!
If you paid by cash or cheque and your ordered furniture is there with your name on it, then the Bank appointed trustee will get you to pay for the balance and you can have your merchandise!
If you paid cash and your ordered merchandise isn't there , then you might be out of luck.
What makes people buy from a company that is advertising a going out of business sale??
Is it that they do not believe that the store is closing?
The advertising laws do not allow misleading statements, and yet I saw the Ad Closing Out!
Does that mean that you can sue the Free press??
Wpg is down to 2 stores that have "better quality" sofas, and I am not too sure if anyone asks , where is this made, anymore.
I was told that the Penthouse brand better sofa was being made in China. I am not sure if that was right.
Eatons and The Bay Fine Furniture are long gone, Steek's Fine Furniture long gone, Wilson's gone, and they ran a closing down BS sale like the Penthouse for about 8 months, with a sales company coming in and selling out at higher retail prices, just as the penthouse may have been doing.
This is regularly $2900 but for you it is $1499, and if you go down the block you will find it for $999!
Wpgers are so gullible! They actually may believe what they are told.
The shame of this , is that the Penthouse is gone! 80 years in Wpg.
Want a good quality sofa?
There are only 2 places left in town, one is Brick's Fine Furniture, who have announced thaat they are closing next year, sold their building, and probably retiring, as they are pushing 70 years old, and Elan Designs Ltd, 803 Erin Street, a local manufacturer of extremely high quality sofas, that ship most of their goods to out of town clients, across the USA and Canada, because Winnipeg's market of people who care to purchase , and can afford "good quality" is only around 5% of the population.
Every warehouse outfit in Wpg has been forced to carry only the "cheapest" made in China or mexico sofas, because our population 95% want cheap!
Junk for the people who do not know how poorly constructed the merchandise is!
Reminds me of many years ago, when I was shopping for a mattress and a salesman showed me how heavy the mattress was, rather than telling me what gauge and how many springs and how many layers of padding were over those springs. Never thought that a heavy mattress meant anything!

Yes another retailer local closes all because we don't and won,t pay more then wholesale . Also cause there are less that can put out the noney for the best as there are less making the money to do it . And there are alot more important things to impress people with . Sad though to see them gone better yet. why buy it if they don't have it and are closing cause you got it for a deal .
Winnipeg Winnipeg too obsessed.

I'd say there are probably more people that can put out big bucks for things like furniture. I'd also say the quality of the less expensive product is much higher today than ever before. Rosen, you'd know this better than most I'd expect.

Where I work in the Exchange we share the same block as Penthouse and I can tell you its been an absolute zoo at work, never seen so many people around that area, street parking was at a severe premium. Your average Winnipegger seeking out bargains I guess, just hope they all got their goods before the bank stepped in.

Penthouse did the exact same thing last year and came back under a new name, wonder if they'll do the same thing again.

China and Mexican pricing has changed our buying patterns, and to the better, I think?
I bought 3 one ton (12,000 BTU) window air conditioners in Springtime and paid $279 each.
In 1978 I purchased 8- 2 ton window air conditioners for $1000 each.
30 years later and less expensive! remarkeable, I think.

30 years ago a cheap sofa was around $1000 to $1500.
Today if you wait around you find some at $299, and lots more at $499 to $599 for the leather where your bum and arm rest, vinyl for the rest. Crap, in my opinion, because the 2 different materials will look different, very quickly, but if you think of a young couple starting up and having to spend only $299, then you can see the great benefit. Who cares about quality!
The bad part would be if a salesperson told you a storey that it is "regularly" $2000 and we want to clear it out for $599, and you believed him/her, and actually thought that you were getting something worth while!
There's nothing the matter with spending $299 for a sofa, but if you want something of value you should be able to get the information regarding construction and pading, which is the only way that you could determine what you were getting!
Ask the following questions.
Is "the hardwood " frame all hardwood or just hardwood where the springs are attached?
How many layers of padding go over the springs, because it is the springs that will cause premature wear on the upholstery?
I want reversible cushions , so the cushions, when properly rotated will get me double the lifetime.
I want arm covers so the arms will maintain
their
good looks longer!
I want the best seat foam available, 2.8 pounds so the cushions will hold and give good support for over 10 years, even better if I can afford latex rubber (25 years).
Do you know what would happen to you , if you asked those questions? You wouldn't get an answer, because the salesperson wouldn't know!

Where is the sofa manufactured? China, Mexico?
Don't bother asking anything after that!
How about service if you aren't happy about the sofa losing its shape after 3 months??

It's been mentioned that the bank closed them down...is this accurate or did the Adelman's close it on their own?

Apparently, they did the same thing in Calgary awhile ago....screwed their employees big-time.

Maybe some peeps think that is a good business model: buy a business under duress. Milk every cent out of it without paying their bills. Then bail when the time is "right". People will always search out a bargain and some will pay the price.

It would be justice if we can prove that the owners practiced that business model before because then you might be able to prove fraud.

Has anyone reported that there is a Bank Foreclosure notice on the front door?

Is their Calgary store closed? I had not heard anything about that?

In Calgary, they did hire an outside sourse to help sell out their inventory. This was in addition to their regular staff.
The outside people got paid their commissions while the regular staff get stiffed.

This was repeated right here in Winnipeg I believe.

CJOB interviewed several present employees last week who told of being owed $20,000 in commissions per person....they may get stiffed.

Taking deposits when you know damn well you're going out of business is a criminal act.

I hope some of these mofos go to jail if they have done so.

What you're describing JTF, is exactly what ZOOM AIR did last summer, they knew full well they were going under but took flight bookings right up to the last minute. There oughtta be a law........

Looks like Winnipeg will have it's own IKEA sooner than predicted...
When they come, they will already be the only distributors left in the city.
I wonder what prices they'll have?

Can anyone report if there is a Bank notice regarding Bankruptcy seizure, on the front door??

If there is, then we know that the company is blameless!!

I have some prime land for sale in Florida...

Seriously, IMHO if you go to a closing out sale, and you are dumb enough to pay cash for something that you cant take immediately then you deserve what you get.

If I were to go to a going out of business sale, I would not buy anything that I could not take with me.

So in the words of Forrest Gump; "Mama always said, Stupid is as Stupid does."

I saw a CTV Friday report- there is no bank notice, just a lame ass sign "closed for inventory".
calgary store is closed , and I hope someone opens to tell the customers whatever is going on. The building is for sale and possibly their 1200 Sargent Avenue distribution centre.
This is not a good way of closing down!

80 years in business!! What a shame!

It's dangerous doing this sort of stuff just before Christmas.

I'd suggest that these people hire some body guards. (Remember the other story about the dude getting shot?)
