So today, on Main street, I saw a guy running surveillance from his vehicle - sitting low and recording people. He was parked near where I was getting in my vehicle so I asked him what he was doing. He proudly shows me his Manitoba Provincial Justice business card that declares him a Tobacco Agent. Says his job is to find people buying those bagged cigarettes (that originate from reserves). He says the government is losing a million dollars a week. How disgusting. I told him so. I also added that the government should get the hell out of the gambling business.
I want to ask the bunch of you a question - do we need to be governed more or do we need to be governed less? This is a great question for the people of Manitoba especially.

i dont understand which part you find disgusting. the fact that they have someone trying to enforce laws? the fact that they are losing so much money?
i also dont understand what that has to do with gambling.

We have far too much government involvement in much of what we do. Like laws against some drugs and gambling and prostitution. The bureaucracy is so monstrous as to almost being stifling. Indeed some laws are so hypocritical as to being farcical. Allowing liquor to be sold (and controlled monopolistically) while marijuana is illegal.

Another big hypocrisy is that liqour and gambling, both tradtional vices, are run by the government. Sure have the control, but to actually be involved in the retail side of both of those "sins"?

Government shouldn't be involved with liquor or gambling. And pot should be 100% legal.

I'm not in agreement with the legalization of pot. I guess some of that goes back to my own values, but it has certainly been reinforced by where I work and the effects it has on the kids around here. I know everyone is probably refrring to it being legal for "adults", but it sure fucks up a lot of kids from what I've seen.

Every single budget where they add more tax to smokes
Every single report that says how bad smoking is.
It will only be a short while (less then 30 years in my opinion) and we will have people trying to make it illegal.

Never. Makes as much sense as trying to ban alchol and we know how that turned out.

you say never now.. but in 20-30 years when only 10% of the population or less smokes and healthcare costs are through the roof....

It's illegal to smoke cigarettes in public buildings, in restaurants, in your own car if there is a kid present ... if trend continues, it could be illegal to smoke it in your house, on a sidewalk, etc.. essentially making cigarettes de facto illegal. If you're going to restrict them so much that there's nowhere you can smoke them, you might as well outlaw them completely.

I don't know if we'll ever make it technically illegal or if we'd even need to. They are doing a pretty good job of causing the habit to slowly drop off. Through taxation and limiting smoking areas you can cut the amount of people taking it up. And that's made a bit easier because it's something you need to do regularly enough to get hooked on it before it's worth your time to pay the extra cost and go out of your way to do it.

I'm all for banning cigarettes. How in the name of Christ did such an unpleasant habit ever become so damned popular? I mean when one first begins smoking it is just an awful experience.

I quit smoking after 30 years and was up to about two packs a day. As cherenkov says I couldn't smoke on planes or restaurants or friends homes... One becomes a social pariah.

It leads to horrid health conditions. I sure do miss my morning hacking spell and the nic-fits...

So yeah, let's ban it. Let's save the next generation from that insidious habit.

In the seven years since I've quit I've not had one cigarette and can count on one hand the number of cigarellos I've smoked. I could probably do without them.

Haven't had a cigarette since August, 1985. Still get the urge once in a while. I actually have dreams about smoking. Is ay ban it, damn the costs, it would have to pay for itself in reduced health care costs.
