I read the feature in yesterdays FP about the aqueduct which brings our drinking water from Shoal lake. It was interesting that someone had the vision 90+ years ago to put this together. It was also interesting to read that there was much squabbling, complaining and opposition to the idea back then. (I never realized that Jenny Gerbasi was that old)

I guess that the aqueduct rates up there with Duff's Ditch, in the fact that it has such a profound impact on the way we live and also that someone had the courage, in spite of the opposition of the day, to push their vision through. Are we lacking individuals with that kind of political will and courage of conviction?

Oh yes. To be sure. Our politicians have zero vision.

Now days it seems that politicians are more interested in getting elected and then re-elected than actually doing what is right for the whole of society. It is no longer a higher-calling but rather just another 'good job' to keep.

Absolutely right on the money again, JTF.

Or is it we want vision but not the cost of it here, as when some project comes along the first thing we seem to do is complain about cost and nimby ism take over.

There was recent study which stated that most people making less than $100,000 a year, will be in trouble when they retire, due to a lack of savings.

Perhaps government should lighten their burden on the taxpayer so that we can spend or save, more money, at our discretion. As more Canadians feel the financial pressures during retirement, including unexpected poverty, you can be certain they will be wishing they had lower taxes and smaller government.

The best visions out there take into account financial reality for most people. Projects that require constant "asks" for more tax dollars should be reviewed by the Auditor General.

There was an ad in yesterday's Free Press. A full page ad. In the ad Ron Evans was extolling the contribution Indians made to Canadian society. In this ad he used a 9 billion dollar number (INAC budget I believe) as the basis of his people's contribution to Canadian society. He listed on half the page all the goods and services bought by Indians. Totaling some 9 billion dollars.

Does it get any better than this?

But the best part of his chart was that the 9.1 billion dollars comes from the federal government to begin with. His argument, lame as it is, is that the feds claw back so much of the money that first nations receive in taxes.

This display indicates the problem. the leadership just keeps arguing that they should get more, after all they are doing such a\ fine job with what they are alreaedy receiving.

Completely lame chart. Let's cancel INAC, close untenable reserves, move some of the money into training and partnering with industry sectors who are in need of workers and put the rest of savings towards paying off the debt. I'll vote for any party who will shut down INAC and wasteful reserves.
