Edmonton is testing them out.

Remember how earlier this year it was suggested for Winnipeg?

Instead of us doing our own test we should get in on Edmonton's test. Cost share, heck do it at the same time and collate the results.

But no, odds are one year from now we will do our own test. Just like we are "testing" a section of used tire road when it has been tested to death.

Wasting time and resources when all we need to do is start partnering with our fellow Canadian Cities

Dean makes an excellent point. In fact there should be a coalition of sorts of like-seasoned cities in Canada and the US. We all have many similarities and problems that we could each benefit from. I call them best practises and we should leverage them all.

I agree, but I had to make that joke.....the only concern I would have however with sharing a study would be say one that was of an environmental impact on usage of a certain system....ie: what may work in LA may not work here or vice versa?

That's why we choose cities that have similar climate (like-seasoned). We have this freeze-thaw cycle that wrecks havoc on our infrastructure that other cites deal with. How? Let's cost-share and otherwise leverage each others findings.

Then again one could reject a study share for many reasons.....I am not justifying all out rejection of a cost sharing initiative but surely there must be reasons other than "job creation" as to why some cities like ours would rather commission their own studies, position papers, briefs etc....

Agreed. Job creation is likely another way of saying we can do it better. I constantly ran into that when attempting to create marketing and business initiatives in Canada from "big-brother" US colleagues.

"Now now inferior Canadian we Americans will show you how..."

But we are already testing.

A shield is installed on one bus in Winnipeg now, and 3 more styles are being tested over the next 3 months.

They anticipate installing shields on all the buses by the end of next year.

Part of me is reluctant to embrace the notion of shields because of the feeling of "unfriendliness" that they exude....one of the things I have enjoyed about riding buses in this town is the friendliness of the drivers that one gets to know on their regular routes....to see someone enclosed in a bubble-like contraption, I dunno, just feels weird...but from a safety standpoint and based on some of the sketchier types I have seen on buses I cannot blame some of the drivers for wanting this sort of security.

In taxis, yes, it was necessary but is it really necessary on buses? Do they not have security cameras on them? I do not know if they do.

by years end all buses are supposed to have the security cameras in them ( or was that by summers end?? )
one looking out the front window
one looking towards the door from over the drivers head
one looking from right behind the driver to the back of the bus
one from the middle of the bus looking backwards.

But a camera does not do much to save ones life or to stop from being spit on.

since our buses all have/will have cameras in them and we seemed to be able to absorb that cost... any freakin reason why we cant get our patrol cars wired for video?

Or is the odd occourance of crap on a bus more important then the daily occourance of crap that our police force faces?

Yes, spitting is a disgusting act.....and spreads pathogens. As to life-threatening situations on buses when was the last time a driver was injured fatally? I am curious. I realize they get threatened and verbally abused from time to time but has there ever been a fatal incident?

Aside from death Winnipeg Transit drivers are assaulted regularly, including fists and spit. There was a Freep story on that last year I believe. Not pleasant...

That sucks. And I will say it again....the spitting thing really irks me. Low-class behaviour! And it spreads disease!
