Interesting.

That is new. I expect John White is responding to complaints about selective comments...

heh... I posted a "nice" posting this morning.

Asking them why they bothered to turn comments on for that discussion when we all know that they will just be turning them off again without any reason later in the day.

yup... they now appear to state why they have closed a topic.

heh.
considering I cant remember which of my 5 emails I used to sign up on the Freep website thought.. I have no idea if they actually emailed me back.

lets see if I can remember what my post was...

Why would we bother to comment on this story we all know that the free press is just going to overreact and close down commenting for everyone anyway. Instead of just shutting down commenting why not delete bad posts, suspend the user for a few days and put something like. The editors have removed this comment because it violates our terms of use.

hmm something close to that anyway.

I think because the latest spates of violence towards children and now this crime spree have caused folks to call a spade a spade and combined with that brilliant editorial by Naomi Lakritz??? Maybe now folks from all communities are speaking up and asking WHERE THE HELL ARE THE CHIEFS and why are they not addressing these tragedies? At least that was what I asked and there was nothing untoward nor inflammatory with regard to my query unless Gordie Sinclair is now doing John White's job?

It is not racist to ask a simple question of a particular leadership.

Ok...the comments are still there.....been enjoying them......especially the remarks from First Nations folks who are fed up with the messes.....as to those PC individuals with the word "settler"? Well I guess its better than the more inflammatory "invader" as one twit put it to me....the past is the past, prepare for the future which could be be pretty damned good if one wants it to be.

well that was a fun read.

some people just cant see the forest for the trees.

I like the one that suggest she go live up north without running water with 10 other people. Why? So she can instill some pride in them and teach them to take care of the house without waiting for someone else to do it?

Better yet...
Re: Natives must take responsibility (July 12). Columnist Naomi Lakritz is under the impression that the only thing First Nations people require is a good scolding from a stern mother figure.

There have been volumes written and studied on the issues that Lakritz dismisses as being so easily solved. Some of those things I disagree with strongly, but at least the people making unfriendly intellectual arguments have some substance to their thoughts.

I have spent all of my life living among indigenous people. I was chief at the Rolling River First Nation for 10 years prior to becoming a grand chief two years ago. I have seen the effects created by decades of attempts to destroy our culture, ways of living and family structures.

First Nations across the country are working on these problems by trying to take control of child and family services, by creating economic development and by working on many other aspects of indigenous people's lives.

Lakritz argues that Canada's history of colonialism and economic oppression has become irrelevant. Problems in health care? According to Lakritz, the solutions are on the Health Canada website. She must think pamphlets can make up for severe shortages of doctors, clinics and medical transportation.

Even the people we fight against in government will concede that the challenges are immense. Some of them would likely concede that simplistic suggestions fit somewhere between naïve and dangerous in that they contribute to misunderstanding. Lakritz's column added nothing to public debate and dialogue.

Yes, First Nations people will be taking responsibility for our lives and we will begin by using the courts, activism and other strategies to regain control of our natural resources.

Re: Natives must take responsibility (July 12). Your ignorance of the true situation at the individual level is surprising and disappointing. Have you ever been to a northern First Nation community? Have you any idea what it would be like to be an expectant young woman on reserve?

Don't you think most want to do what is best for their child? The fact is that many of these young women are still unaware of the damage FASD can cause, and have not been exposed to proper parenting. They are sometimes dealing with their own unresolved issues and do not have the resources or support to make good decisions.

Do you know what it is like to grow up in poverty, go hungry, not have a single penny at your disposal, have no means of transportation, no telephone, be a victim of abuse, or not have proper and/or accessible medical facilities in your community? Based on your paternalistic and condescending article, I highly doubt it.

I have worked at three different federal departments in Ottawa. Your article reminded me of policy discussion with senior staff -- most of whom were non-aboriginal and also did not have a clue about the daily lives of those being referred to in your article. It was pathetic watching people who do not have a clue or a genuine inclination to try to assist in solving these issues.

It is a fact FASD programs in Manitoba are chronically under-supported and underfunded at the political level by all levels of government, including First Nation leadership. I guess the issue is not sexy enough to care about. In this case, money could significantly reduce the incidence of FASD but it is a lot cheaper to take the moral high ground and make it seem as though it is the victims' fault because of their weak character.

Naomi Lakritz has hit the nail on the head with her observation that it is time for people to take responsibility for themselves, and decide to work for something better. How many people have sacrificed to come to Canada to make a new life for themselves and their families, without monthly assistance from the government?

LOL oh my thats rich.

anyone and mean ANYONE !!!!!!!!!! that does not know drinking during pregnancy is moronic at best and child abuse/endagerment at the worst ... more then likely is dead.

Its this simple. MOVE.. leave the reserves, use every legal means possible. Get to where the support services are, get to where the jobs are, get to where the education is. DO IT NOW!. Dont wait for your cheif to set up a urban reserve. Dont expect it to be easy and to have everything handed to you. JUST leave and LEAVE now.

I have often wondered why they don't leave the reserves. Fear is one. They may be afraid they won't keep getting cheques for sitting around and doing nothing all day.

Grand Chief Morris J. Swan Shannacappo is merely doing what all chiefs in Manitoba do: empower their people to look for excuses. He and "excusists" like him keep making up excuses and pointing fingers at everything and everybody else.

Time for change in a big way. We truly need to close the reserves unless they can be fully self-sustaining for all their people.

We do need to be careful of what we ask for. If we shut down these reserves most will end up in Winnipeg without city coping skills, job skills, education, etc...

The horesh1t violence we see now will seem like a walk in the park compared to what will happen.

That said 80 chiefs and their peeps will be out of very well paid and cushy jobs and they will fight this like never before...

no no.. keep the reserves open, so that real traditional people can actually live there if they want.. And yes there are still people who make a life out of hunting and trapping and fishing.
