24 days instead of 14.

Good..

buy why are there even rules surronding this? Should we allow farmers and the like to have direct access to the market all the time?

instead of 14? a farmer's market can only be open 2 weeks a year?

That's stupid.

Why can't a farmer's market be open year round.

I can understand some rules about what they can sell (ie. no rotting food, or imported stuff), but to limit when they can sell? What's the purpose there?

not sure

and it limits them to two days per week for a total of 14 sell days. ( well now 24 )

makes no sense. Farmers' markets should be open 7 days per week if they want to. ( which they dont usually so 24 days is actually enough )

Gah?

Why do they have stupid rules like this in the first place?

Honestly, I never knew that.

I figured farmer's markets were allowed to be open all the time, but the reason they weren't was well, we grow lots of feed crops around here....who would want a bushel of canola or barley? lol

And is it done by hours? or days?

So WHEN they are open...can they be open 24 hours that day?
Or if they get a total of 144 hours...does that mean 18/8 hour days?

yeah things you learn eh? all good though, now.. I mean really 7 weeks of farmers markers only before and now they are increase to 12 weeks? makes sense because well.. stuff has to grow before you can start selling it. but still its a head shaker as to why it would have ever been limited.

Ask the guy that speaks into carrots why there is a limit.

Boy George? Why would he know anything about Manitoba laws?

And in the off months, when stuff is growing....don't they usually have preserves and the like that they would like to sell from the previous years?

Some have honey that they've collected and that could bring in some extra coin..but hey, I just I dumb city boy, what do I know.

nope.. you are bang on Smile

people just tend to not think of farmer's markets as anything but "fresh" from the garden stuff though.. not sure how much of a draw the preserves and quilts and such would have on their own.

Your right about the draw....but I know plenty of older people who grew up on farms and like those sorts of things....and we do have a aging population...so why not try and soak'em...er...pander....err...offer them things they might like to buy? Surprised

I'm not being fair to my elders....my bad, just trying to have a little fun.

BUT.....I do know that when we're running low on honey...it'd sure be nice to get some local stuff rather then buying it from a mega-mart.

It's actually odd about that.
After having attended a couple farmer's markets here...and two REALLY CRAPPY Flea Markets (the one on Ellice for example), I had thought of leasing a large plot of land and renting space to host a weekly flea market.

So every weekend the same vendors could setup and sell their stuff from the first weekend of May through the last weekend in October.

Eventually to setup some indoor venues for those who need cover from the weather, or other amenities.

I wonder if that qualifies as a Farmer's Market? or if I could call it something else Wink.

flee Markets and farmers markets operate under different rules.

One cannot sell produce that one grows I believe. You can get a Pedlar's license and buy some corn from the wholesaler and sell it on the side of the road, but you can't grow it and sell it.

You have to let Larry do it for you....and of course, pay him for it handsomely btw.

we should be putting our indoor rinks to better use during the summer months.

They could be busy every weekend if they allowed people to set up "yard sales" in one place like this.

The city needs to start treating the populace like the owners they are. We own this city, it should work for us.

rules and regulations for some dumb ass politicians who think that we or they are needed to regulate everything. markets should be open when the farmers have produce to sell or not to sell. rules for sunday store opening, rules at what price milk has to be sold- cannot discount, - leave things alone and the stores will be open when they can do business.

Arenas might work. Would they be too hot during some periods?

I'd like to see a permanent farmers market/flea market with bakers and butchers and candlestick makers. It would be a great draw. Go for it AA.

the Arenas sure get damn hot during the pavillions.

A couple of kick ass fans and the doors being open should work. Cant be worse then being in direct sun.

The Forks sounds like the perfect place, but of course the inside merchants wouldn't allow it!
We buy our local produce out in Charleswood.
