How come same sex only schools and such are allowed to operate? Would they not be in violation of Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

O no not a girls boy debate again least it is not hockey this time . I believe you can do this as long as you specify it and you are not a public place , open to the public to walk in .

Pav is correct as this day care will be in a private all girls school so it will be available to children who will eventually be enrolled in the school program. There are all girls programs in some of the public high schools that are very beneficial to the girls who choose to enroll in them. Good luck to them if it flies.

nope. You can not discriminate against any group of people unless there is just cause. ie... Catholics can refuse non catholics from their church if they really felt like it.

Girl Guides advertised for an office position a few years back. One of the criteria was that you had to be eligible to become a member of girl guides. Membership in girl guides is only open to females.

Nothing like putting an ad in the paper that screams 'take us to HRC!!!

Now, having said that if the school is private, and it's private funds paying for the daycare, I have no problem with it being girls only ( just I would have no problem with it being boys only in the same situation)

If you look at subsection 15 (2) of the charter is states "(2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability." And I looked up the meaning of "amelioration" and it is "to make better or more tolerable" so in this instance, regardless of whether or not it is a private or public funded day care, it does not break any Charter rules.

According to the charter, the female sex is is considered a disadvantage group (although that is not my opinion). But with that being said, I do know the advantages of young girls being in a same sex setting and how it is beneficial to their learning. And day care is just an extension of the school learning process.

I think the idea is that the girls won't be distracted by having boys around...and vica versa for boys' schools.

I went to an all boys school and wasn't distracted by girls at school ...but I sure thought about them a lot...

...other than that, I can only see a savings/benefit in having to provide only one kind of washroom.

Benefits have to do with a young girl who is not very confident with themselves. If you have girls in your family (or think back to when you were in school) you will see traditionally that girls excel in English and Social Studies and boys excel in Math and Sciences. Having an all girls setting allows the girls to become more confident in themselves and also allows them to not be intimidated when asking the "stupid" questions because the boys aren't there to laugh at them. Also some girls learn differently than boys when it comes to math and science (even more of a hands on approach than a regular mixed class). As well if you have the opportunity to see how the class structures and the way the curriculum is delivered in an all girls school as opposed to an all boys school, you would see how the difference benefits each in the specific delivery.
My youngest daughter (who is now 21) enrolled in the all girls program at Sisler for her first year there and it helped her self confidence in both the math and science classes for that year as well as the next three years when she went into the regular classes as she was then confident enough in asking the questions that she needed to know the answers to without the feeling of being intimidated.

Ahhh whatever. Have all boys schools and all girl schools or all gender schools. I personally don't care.

Do you really believe the stereo-typical pronouncement on boys/math girls/art thing? I thought that that was disproven years ago. Did somebody disprove the disprove?

Personally it was never an issue for me or for my older daughter but for my younger one it was. It does have to do with personality, self confidence and to some extent how the girl was raised at home, whether she was encouraged to be outspoken/tomboy or was what I call a "girlie" girl. My daughters as so completely different in personality and style in that one is very outspoken and very much the athlete and the other is very much the home body, book reader. I think that with these types of classes/programs being available that the stereotypes are being broken but they do still exist.

JTF it only works that way when the "nonequal" party feels that they can get more. Any time that it comes up that say.. more men should be accountants then women because they do math better... thats discrimination.

DeanK... when my dad went to school it was the opinion of the school teachers that addition should be done from the top down. So they followed the eyes of the student as he was doing his calculation in his head. So an equation like the following:
