Canadians needing passports? yeah.. that was a lie

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/George-W_-Bush-and-Bill-Clinton-had-no-idea-about-new-U_S_-passport-rule.html

"
"I'll be frank with you Frank, I don't know about the passport issue," Bush told the crowd of 6,000.
"I thought we were making good progress on using a driver's licence to cross the border. What happened to the easy-pass card?"
Clinton too said he'd only heard about the passport requirement a day earlier, adding that in all likelihood most Americans were completely unaware of it as well.
That could mean far fewer Americans coming to Canada, which would be bad for the economy and our relationship, warned Clinton.
"I promise you, you have got my attention with this, so I'm going back home I'll see if there is anything else I can do," he said to cheers from the audience.
"I'd like to hear Homeland Security's defence of the passport issue.""

It does not surprise me. Homeland Security seems to have carte blanche. And let;s face it Canada is never real high on Americans radar screens. They may have completely ignored the passport issue simply thinking what's the big deal anyway. Everybody needs a passport to get into the US. Forgetting of course that Canadians have never needed a passport for entry.

Maybe with these two high profile ex-Presidents will get some attention to this when they get home.

Doe,s not the rule work the same for Americans coming home from here now .

Yup. But what it means for Americans is they'll simply find somewhere else to go. Most Canadians won't give up their shopping trips and they'll simply go get their passport. Then there is the fact that 1 in 3 Canadians have a passport while 1 in 4 Americans do not.

Why bother, why don't you just get a passport already?

The enhanced ID seems easier to obtain. Maybe a passport is not required. If all one ever plans to do is drive into the states... BTW, Is a passport more $$$?

A passport's about $80. I believe. Plus the cost of your Birth Certificate I'd imagine.

So the enhanced ID is considerably cheaper at what $30? That might be reason enough to go for it. Plus it is easier to cart around. I always worried about losing my passport because of its size...
