Should schools be allowed to raise private money for equipment and facilities?

I dont get it, what are we trying to decide here? Is there an article or news item somewhere that someone saw that would clarify why the freep is asking this?

It's been a question for years...and a practice schools have in many places in the US.

For example my old High School wanted to add a second gym to the building for the Junior High students. It wasn't in the budget for the school or the school board...so they started a fund-raising campaign. Had several events/activities and collection drives.

They ended up building a beautiful new gym with locker rooms & showers, about 3/4 the size of the original one, and a carpeted floor.

I'd bet someone has proposed the option to a school here to expand/improve...but were told it's against some stupid regulation somewhere.

considering how much fundraising my kids school does for stuff I find this hard to beleive. Of course its not for adding buildings... buildings which would have to be maintained and presumably heated,

I really don't like the idea of schools churning out "little salesmen" by sending them out every couple of months with merchandise for sale.

I used to hate all that stuff too. But what do you think the school system should "churn out"?

I don't agree with the schools sending out big sales campaigns either (though my schools & scouts did lots of that over the years).

The advantage to it, is the timeline. You send out catalogues for everyone to read and order at their leisure, pass around to friends & family, and then return with payment for orders.

It's much easier, cheaper, and probably more profitable than setting up a fund raising "event" and asking everyone to show up on a given day to contribute.
