This is not rocket surgery eh? What happens to the reports police write up? Are they entered into a database? Extracting certain details and putting then on line is a no brainer and is easily automated.

There is likely never going to be the will to go there. The police will throw up every roadblock, legal or otherwise, to prevent it.

These folks sure report strange stuff....

A local resident reported a man leaving Leobau Store on foot walking towards Hwy 21.

A motorist reported a car down by the Rabb’s Creek under the bridge.

Gotta' love those small towns eh.

Actually they are kept on file now, the report but not the officers notes and yes the constitution would kick in as long as names are not published it would be OK , till you are proven guilty.

yeah I dont think we want the entire detail of the report neccessarily.
or even the exact address

cops called to messy yard on haddon road to stop nunchuk weilding mad man (officer reports it was some drunk fool with a vivid imagination)

would suffice.

Transparency Pav. It would give us a real bird's eye view of what is happening out "there". I can't think of one good reason for them to do that. Can you?

And do you suggest they are published after all nonpublic info is taken out , and where do we set up a room for you to read them and are most going to take the time . Yes well it sounds good at first and is not a bad thing most after a while, will go back to complacency. And the rest will tie up the process with knee jerk complaints about how there door worked better before it was broken in by the police during a Execution of Warrant .

I guess what I have a hard time with is having been involved with justice and seeing just how many of the complaints pan out to something , and how many are useless cripes when looked into , or they do not want to come to the LERA hearing cause there husband will find them if there name is used .

As someone who has been witness to this area of the police procedure there are more waste of time complaints then real legitimate one s by a ratio of 6 to 1 . Not that there should not be transparency just that you have make sure that you do not handcuff police more then the perps .

My take is that theres a reasonable medium. While some of the police reporting must become more open and accessible, do we need to know about the daily round-up of livestock? Or at least the 4 legged variety.

Not sure how many people would actually use this type of detail, but if GOM wants it, then it should be provided. Smile

it could tell me if I think my tax dollars are being spent properly, it could help me decide if I am okay with more police funding, it could help the community decide if there are gaps that need to be filled. It would give me an awesome voyeuristic experience.

Its simple, real simple, so simple a backwater burg can do it.

how about you give me a good reason why this would be a bad idea and what anyone would have against it?

The person whose name accidentally is not blacked out in a report.....

why do any names need to be involved?

So you'll retrain the police to enter reports without using names?

Actually that could work. If the fields that are publicly accessible are indicated, so the police can use "subject A" and "subject B" type of indications, with the name fields held in a protected field, that would work?

Now what is the cost of this training and interface changes, and to what benefit?

Put your name in for the police board and find out I am not against it, just not into tieing up the up system with useless debate about stuff people do not fully understand . If they have a legitimate beef and it is documented then go for it .

I must be missing something Rat, what makes you think that we need the details like

Police responded to a call of Deank had his pants around his ankles and his gitch on his head at 23 Haddon Road
a simple
Police repsonded to a call of complaint of extremely attactive naked man in Garden Grove

is all that is needed to be reported on.

That is your perception and yes it needs to be strengthened but not run by the general population . The problem with that being it gets bogged down with every perceived wrong people have some are real some are a waste of time and funds to look into .

And with our system every complaint will have to be looked into which means another layer of bureaucracy to deal with it , less money for cops .

"That is your perception and yes it needs to be strengthened but not run by the general population"

well a police board certainly should not be run by the police.

"The problem with that being it gets bogged down with every perceived wrong people have some are real some are a waste of time and funds to look into "

If officers had cameras on them at all time there would be little waste of time and money.

Accused: Officer 123456 kicked me in the NUTS!
Investigation: Yup, he sure did and you deserved it a$$hole, now frick off.

Pav can correct me if I'm wrong, but I would assume that police officers take down information such as names and addresses.

and? you see any names in the above reports other then the deputy's names? ( which in my opinion should not be published )

heck our police force already releases some Media information
http://winnipeg.ca/police/press/2009/05may/2009_05_19.stm

they know how to leave names out when they want to.,
