In a newly discovered blog (Winnipeg 'O My Heart) I read about interesting Manitoba locales to visit. In all my $% years I've never really felt inspired to drive Manitoba just to discover Manitoba. Usually I go directly to my destination without passing GO.

So, if I was to plan a trip to discover Manitoba, in bite sized day-trip or weekend chunks, where should I go? And what will I discover when I get there?

Thanks and credit goes to Laurel.

Southwestern Manitoba and the Riding Mountain area are two of my parts to explore because they are often overlooked....i like the escarpment, Spirit Sands Provincial Park......never get bored hiking the sand dunes.....lots of good bird watching going out towards Turtle Mountain area.

I'm going to bring the kids to the snake dens on Tuesday. We usually go once a year, makes for a fun day outside.

You'll find Lake of the Sandhills golf course in the SE corner, with a hotel and restaurant. Truly, beautiful country. Lots of deer, too. 2 hours drive.

"Lots of deer, too"

yeah my mom and my bro in law have both hit one near there.

We have had about 5 close calls on the way to my moms one time a deer ran alongside the van for a while, thankfully it broke to the right.. not the left.

Go get drunk with at Gimli's annual Viking festival and see my fellow Icelanders for what they really are. It's my understanding that merely being as Icelandic as possible is a recognized sport over there... or if it was likened to a zoo, I can't remember.

I've always wanted to be airdropped deep into the woods in Eastern Manitoba, with nothing but a compass and Gerber MK-I knife.

But, failing that, I'd like to travel via pushcart up to Koshelanyk Lake Smile

Clearwater lake was formed by a comet.....it is the one place in Manitoba where the water is like the Caribbean.....you have to walk out at least a quarter of a mile for the water to get deep.....it is a gem to be sure and worth the drive.

What would be the point of the compass and knife? Wouldn't the impact kill you??

okay lets clear some things up
clearwater is lake is spring fed and is called clearwater because at one time the water was so clean you could easily see 60 feet down. At one point it was the 6th clearest lake in the world.
Because of the spring fed its is FARKING cold. like really really cold.

I lived 30 minutes from there for a huge chunk of my life and quite frankly never cared for it much at all, the caves are cool to be sure... but the lake itself... meh

there are a few beaches yes of course where its a very long walk out to get deep but there are just as many places were you can dive off the edges.

I never found the shallow part to be cold....of course it is spring fed but I am pretty sure a comet hitting that area is the reason for the geological makeup of said lake....at least that is what my northern spouse told me....now I am gonna have to go and do some more investigating.....

well its damn cold compared to the variety of other options right around there.

Rocky lake kicks ass.. there is even one point on rocky that there is a natural diving place.. teh main rock is about 20 or 30 feet in the air and the pool of water underneath is at least 50 feet deep. and it has this awesome sloping natural rock that gradualy comes out of the water to make an easy exit

Another good place to jump off of is around Caddy Lake area....Bird Lake.....oh man we are so blessed in this province with teh preCambrian shield areas....as well that new area near Little Limestone lake going up past grand Rapids.....rugged terrain and great for serious canoeists/campers...

Pisew Falls south of Paint Lake, Thompson areas.......hell drive all the way up to Lynn Lake or Co-op Point (Kinoosao).....

I suppose it depends on luck - how I land, relative speed upon impact, and the height from which I was dropped.

Seriously though, I'd have a parachute...

West Hawk Lake was formed by a meteorite which is why it is so deep, and therefore cold.

Another great destination is Steep Rock... 2.5 hours up Hwy 6

I am in fact of Icelandic heritage on my maternal side. I have in fact attended Islendingadagurinn many times whilst a teenager and destroyed MILLIONS of brain cells as a result.

This more than anything explains everything. It had nothing to do with a tire iron...

from the sounds of it the pushcart idea may end up as a no go. I still have a few contacts looking into stuff for me though, Maybe canoe up? or back?
