I was just reading a story about Major Michelle Mendes death when I noticed the Winnipeg Sun column was titled "Canuck dies in Kandahar". I felt the title was in incredibly bad taste. This woman died while serving all Canada. Would it be so difficult to show her the utmost respect and dignity due her by simply using Canadian instead of Canuck?

Personally I find "Canuck" somewhat offensive. I know I won't acknowledge the word and will not use it in a favourable fashion.

Is "Canuck" offensive to you?

I'm not offended by the term, but I agree that it's use in the headline was inappropriate.

It is a very "friendly" way of talking to or about anyone who claims to be Canadian! I wouldn't take offense.
" don't take offense, when no offense is intended!

Very good statement to keep you out of trouble!

To use as a header in an article like that is not appropriate at all, the term Canadian shows respect in my opinion. Having said that I don't mind being known as a Canuck.......afterall me and Dean are a pair of Canuckleheads Very Happy

heh,,.I am indeed a canucklehead

personally I view canuck as a term of endearment. I would love to have that as how people know me.

heck we are making a team of hockey players to take to a turnie down south and we have chosen the name the Winnipeg Canucks.

That's unfortunate. Use the Winnipeg Jets. That would be original.

I don't find the term offensive, but it didn't belong in that headline.

Agreed. The Sun needs to continue to remind everyone of what a rag it is, lest someone expecting a quality newspaper buy a copy by accident. Mission accomplished.

How so? I believe the best logo in all sports is the Chicago Black Hawks.

Heh he. Imagine that, Chicago Jewish Hawks. Their logo could be the face of an Hasidic Jew with a fedora and ringlets...

Those team names like Indians, Warriors,Blackhawks, Braves were in place long before it became a faux paus (spelling?) to use those terms. No need to change them now!

It is just something I find weird what about the Toronto Whitys or the Regina Farmers . Just a point being we seem to pick minorities not our own .

Would not want to stich that face into the sweater .

Regina Farmers would not be offensive. Regina Honkies would be. Atlanta Braves would not be offensive. Atlanta Half-Breeds would.

It seems to me the use those names honours those people no? Why would anyone name a team with the intent to denigrate that name? Makes no sense to me. I think we really have taken political correctness too far.

That said, if I was one of those people I might not see it the same way.

The Sioux didn't have a problem with the name The Fighting Sioux down in North Dakota. I believe that they voted to keep/allow the use of the name just a sort time ago.

It's a name of honour, in the sense that Indians were considered to be honourable and hard-fighting when those teams were made.

Today, I seriously doubt they'd be considered so quickly...as many of them have become welfare dependent and criminals.

As far as "Canuck" goes though...I think it depends on the context. I agree about that article, the respect should've been made for military personnel, and especially an officer...though in most of the US, the "Canuck" term is said endearingly...not as an offense.
