In Manitoba the crown believes it to be a whole freakin 8 years.. 8 measily years.

The guys defense attorney thinks 4.. But defense attorneys are supposed to think low.

The freakin Crown should be thinking alot more then 8.

The problem , or one of the problems, is the very low jail time for everything, except throwing a shoe at Harper!
Check out the U.S. times for a similar crime, 2 to 3 times longer! I believe that the threat of jail time is not a deterrent to doing the crime, but I have come to believe that having the perps off the street, simply makes the street safer for me, G.O.M. and DeanK, which is what our system has to do! The short times given out are a reflection of cheapskate harper not wanting to fund more spaces in the penitentiary!
If marihuana were taken off the list of no-no's, that would cut 90% of the bad guys being incarcerated.
That 90% number was given to me this weekend by a lawyer friend of mine!

But going in, the rate is somewhere around 30%. The extra 60% comes from inside the penitentiary...
So, what you're saying is, kill a guy, go in for 8 years, smoke pot, and get a few years discount off your sentence? scratch

dont forget that its really only two thirds of 8 years, thanks to statutory release.

so taking a life is actually worth just a little over 5 years of jail time

Way too low, in my opinion! Way too lenient!

Don't forget the double credit before sentencing...perhaps a couple of years?? You have to take that off too?

The general public tends to seriously overestimate the preventive effect of punishment more generally. Do not expect people to commit any fewer crimes by punishing them more.

I agree with rosencrentz... it's about keeping them off the streets, not preventing the crime. The only realistic way to actually deter crime is with high education and a healthy job market.

Also, when something as minute and insignificant as smoking marijuana can give you jail time, people shouldn't expect others to respect the law. I wouldn't respect a law that said I couldn't express my views, why should I respect the law when it tells me, an adult, what I'm allowed to do with my own body? It's not even about whether marijuana is safe or not, let's assume it's as dangerous as heroin, the fact remains that its consumption is culturally accepted, like it or not. When it's normal to break the law, what the hell do people expect?

You'll quickly discover our politicians and our judicial system are loaded with bleeding hearts whose sole ambition is to "rehabilitate" our criminals.

While I laud the notion of rehabilitation, I'm all for punishment. It is only with real punishment (in jail, for a long time) can we ensure the criminal element cannot commit more crime.

And yet...the government keeps making more (stoopid) laws to break.
