at first this sounds good...Leaf Rapids mayor wants to enact a 3 strikes law... 3 crimes in one year and you are booted out of town....like I said it sounds good... until it gets to the..."Charrier said he wants to see the province step up to care for people turfed out of Leaf Rapids for bad behaviour,"

Considering one of his crimes he is on about is being in the drunk tank 3 times in one year I just see this causing a crazy amount of craziness.

Yeah right....they will just head down the road to lynn Lake....like that poor town needs anymore bullshite....what he proposes will not fly....pure posturing but then again the pool of availability for intelligent officials up there is kinda skint....i oughtta know as I used to live up that way...

remember the uproar last year when a Winnipeg Judge sent one kid out of town? Remember how much the recieving town freaked? And that was one kid. Solution is more jails..want to habitually commit crimes? Too bad we wont allow that..

Remote camps are no good if they aren't doing any good while there I say make them get there grade12 . Should keep them there for 25 to 30 yrs .

I heard the mayor of Leaf Rapids on TGCTS this afternoon. I was very impressed. He is Metis. The population of the town is 80% Aboriginal. He claimed there was a significant alcohol problem in the town and from other nearby communities. What impressed me was his "he has to fix the issue" attitude. A refreshing change from most who say it is someone else's responsibility.

Like I said.. at first it sounds good... but the negative impacts of his idea, almost seem like they are being used as leverage to get the province to actually do something about the crime rate. Hell with only 550 people, how freakin hard can it be for "the Authorities" to clean it up?

I don't even know if Leaf has an actual cop compliment there any longer....the closest detachment of RCMP if that is the case would be 60 miles up the road in |Lynn Lake....

From what I gathered there was local RCMP presence AND a local jail. He also said he does NOT have a gang problem. I suspect his is purely an alcohol related problem. And not just local peeps.

Reading between the lines I suspect peeps from nearby reserves are coming into town and getting stupidly drunk. Then they are a problem.

Perhaps the three strikes rule is aimed at those peeps. That works for me BTW...

That particular problem has been going on for decades...we used to get guys coming up our way from Thompson for the Winter Carnival just so they could beat up rookie RCMP....it was actually kinda fun as I ran a bar at that time and those dudes swore that they would never monkey mess when \i was on duty....when \I got off duty I would sit back and watch the fun begin....

long live BIG SID MERASTY...took 6 coppers to wrestle his ass out the door.....he was out the next day....heheheh
