I think 20 years ago we just started to use salt though.

nope. salt has been in use since the 50s.
what else did you think they were using to melt the ice?

We didn't use it here since the 50's. I'm pretty sure it was around 20 years ago we started using it here, give or take.

I know they were using it in Toronto in the 60's, but we weren't.

The use of salt is dependant on the temperature. In Wpg if the temperature is -5*C or +20 F salt is used because it works. At -20C it doesn't.
Out east the temps are usually in the zone where salt works , so salt is used all the time and eats up automobiles undercarriage.

Every rational person in the world is unhappy being warned about the bad effects of everything ever made in the world, when it is dumped into the Red River.

This is because it is a proven fact that there are crazy people downstream of Winnipeg, specifically Selkirk , Manitoba!

No, 'tis true DeanK. They use salt to melt the ice as opposed to us using sand to gain traction... You should see the MOUNTAIN of salt Toronto accumulates every year.

From http://govpro.com/public_works/highways/gov_imp_76319/
“We constructed this facility in the 2001-2002 winter season to reduce the amount of salt that is emitted into the atmosphere or the environment,” says Ken Boyd, support services engineer for the Winnipeg Public Works Department. “It is part of our Salt Management Plan.” Environment Canada asks that any municipality that uses more than 500 tons of salt on an annual basis develops a salt management plan.

The 100- by 220-foot Cover-All building houses approximately 10,000 tons of winter sand, which is treated with 5 percent sodium chloride. The building also houses 1,000 tons of pure salt. A temperature higher than minus 10 C (14 F) requires the use of the salt to de-ice the streets. For temperatures lower than minus 10 C, the salt-sand mixture is used.

“The climate in Winnipeg is such that the majority of winter we have to use more sand than salt,” Boyd explains. “That’s why we have approximately a 10 to 1 ratio of salt housed in our Cover-All building.”

Not sure where you heard about calcuim, Pavolo.

the 791 5222 number doesn't show a company name, and that allways bothers me. Seems pretty fair pricing for very low Km chrysler vans, 2005 at 69K at $8800, and another one at $9450.

I think there are good/bad quality vehicles through every manufacturer.

I had a ford windstar - poor, poor quality

I have a chrysler pacifica - bought off lease - quality has been really good

I had a couple of japanese imports - poor quality.

So while there are general qulity rules for each. Mfr, there are good/bad for each too.

Auctio out on Highway #7 is for dealers only. There is the leftovers auction that is open to the public. A very dangerous place to buy unless you are a mechanic or have taken a mechanic with you to figure out what will have to be fixed!
Some of the smaller dealers may pick off off lease vehicles, 3 years old that still have the new manufacturers warranty.
I bought a 1999 extended Chrysler Van from Southglen. I ordered in from him, he went down to the auction for dealers and I ended up paying $4000 for a van 2 years ago, that he fixed up, and there has been zero things needing fixing.Incredible price for a car that he replaced the driveshaft, a continual problem and a few other things. he showed me what he paid and he showed me what he repaired and he charged me 15% over his cost, which is very , very reasonable! John at Southglen Motors. great guy to deal with.
