I switched over to MTS on Monday. Works fine with the cable plugged into the ethernet card of the computer. When I set it up with the router, my dlink WBR-1310 router can't get a conection.

MTS and dlink tech support have had no success.

Has anyone successfully gotten a router to work with PPPoE on MTS?

Works fine for me.
2 computers (Vista and XP) and a Wii all connect just fine.
Linksys Type G. Not sure the model I use.

I have mts and a d link, I had it working for a couple months then it crapped out and haven't been able to get it to work since. I have it hard wired now too....which really sucks on a laptop!

No problem for me either, MTS and linksys router, and I have noticed that MTS has actually been working a bit better in the past couple of days.

Wow. Strange coincidence but I have the exact same setup, MTS DSL and same D-Link router. From what I remember the CD that came with the router had something strange in the setup that made no sense the way it was written. From what I remember, you had to run the installation disc before you connected your router to the PC. It would just hang if the cables were already connected. Frustrated the hell out of me for like 2 hours. Did you run the installation software that came with the router?

That's from what I remember....it's been up and running for close to 2 years with no problems (knock on wood). Much more reliable than the POS Microsoft wireless router I had before that.

BTW, I'm running my desktop wired, 3 laptops wireless, the Wii wireless, and my Xbox 360 wired all at the same time with no problems whatsoever (knock on wood). So either there's something wrong with the setup, or maybe you go a lemon. Is it too late to return it?

I just switched back to Shaw. Took 5 minutes to reconfigure the router, reboot, and everything works perfectly again.

I guess that's one way to fix the problem. Still can't think what would have been giving you problems with MTS, did you set up the router for the PPPoE connection? Make sure that the login settings were correct?

When you say "Works fine with the cable plugged into the ethernet card of the computer. When I set it up with the router, my dlink WBR-1310 router can't get a conection", do you mean that your internet worked fine whith PC connected to the modem only? If that's the case then the problem had nothing to do with MTS, but something wrong with your router settings.

yes. yes.

yes. for a couple of days. Then the PC couldn't even get a connection. Also, the phone line seems staticky. However, the MTS TV works and looks great! But we are switching back to Shaw.

Did that storm we had (lights flickering) effect things perhaps?

its because MTS is not an always on connection. Thats why if you want you can have on icon on your desktop to connect to the internet. If I remember correctly, MTS uses a User ID and password setup. But I haven't used in about 3 years, so this may have changed. Routers don't play well with user IDs and passwords. It can be done though. But I am sure that would have been the first thing MTS would have tried if they still use passwords. Otherwise maybe a Firmware update for the router. Although I am sure Dlink techs probably would have recommended doing that. Other then that the router its self should just have to be set to PPPoE and away you go. I know with Shaw that they don't require a password, so you can just hook up a router and good with little changes to the router.

Just had a thought: Possible firewall confliction? Windows firewall can be a b1tch often!

Yes, I set the username and password up on the router to use to 'dial' in to the MTS PPPoE. The firmware on the router was the latest version available on the dlink website.

another thought... that the PPPoE settings in the router were set to Manual. This would mean that every time you would want online at you would have to log in to the Router and then tell it to connect. Most routers have a option in the PPPoE settings for Always on/ Connect automatically or Manually Connect. That could have been it. Again you think that Dlink guy would have caught that though.

The other thing to consider is MTS.

They quite often run "updates' to their software which they send out to the boxes/modems.

Typically it's a security feature and could have blocked your routers.

They did run an update last week on their mobile service. Knocked my cell phone out of service (couldn't make or receive calls) till I called them from a landline and complained...then they fixed the error.

Yep, I tried all those settings.

Wow....that's really strange. Running the exact same setup with no problems. What operatiing system are you running and did you run the D-Link install software?

It may also be your location in the city. MTS is in the midst of some major upgrades to the broadband network in and around the City of Winnipeg in preparation of having HDTV available to users via broadband as well as through the way it is now. This also means more channels available in HDTV. We have had some issues over the weekend mostly late at night/early in the morning hours and I have also noticed that my TV box re-boots itself every morning at 6AM which is what prompted me to call MTS to ask why this is happening on a daily basis.
Just a possibility?????????

I am running XP on the box that is connected to the router. I ran the install software when I first setup the router. I didn't try re-installing it for the MTS. Wish I had - would have been interesting to see if that would do it. I assumed the software would affect the computer's ability to communicate with the router - not the router's ability to communicate with the WAN.

I'm in the market for a wireless router. I'm on MTS and will be connected a desktop (wired) and two laptops -- all Windows. Recommendations? (Sounds like initial set-up could be a pain.)

mts does not give supoort for routers period and quiet a few routers won't work with dslr at all but... mts does offer a router that u have no controll over its their way or the highway witch is a pain, but the Linksys routers tend to work fine with the dsl for what ever reason

Don't buy a D-link if your on MTS. After my D-link failed I bought a Linksys and haven't had a single problem since. The guy at Best Buy told me that D-link's do not support DSL and that pretty much everyone that has MTS always ends up returning their D-links and buying Linksys.

Just go with new Linksys N router. They can be found for about $80 almost everywhere.

If you cheap out and buy a Netgear, D-Link or Belkin is when you start to run into trouble. D-Link routers are notorious for overheating and dying, NetGear is never stable and I have seen many just die for no reason and Belkin has pretty lousy throughput and wireless range and its really noticable if you have more than 2 computers using it at the same time.

Thanks all. I was reading reviews on the 'net, and it was pretty depressing. Every brand/model had people complaining about frequent dropped connections, poor support, etc... but it may depend on the service provider. Sounds like Linksys is the way to go with dsl...

I have found that Linksys is far more flexible having seen that system used in some strange locales over the years.
