I will be cheering for both Pittsburgh and Ottawa, and gleefully cheering for whoever is playing the Leafs.

I have to cheer for the Leafs as my Grandfather played for them and My late mom is not there to do it . So I have kept the tradition alive , went to see the Cup once and was glad to see my Grandfathers name on it . He is also in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame at the MTS Center . My heart is for Calgary .

Moose have Dallas Stars connections too...
Is hockey still all that interesting now that it's so Americanized?
Are trading cards still selling well?
Are youngsters just looking up to individual players and not teams?
Do local community centres have trouble pulling together enough kids to make their teams?

I've really no idea. Was a time where I might have been able to answer those questions. Today? Not so much.

I think Detroit will win. I hope Chicago starts to regain some of their old glory. I'd like to see Boston and Montreal make it into the playoffs. Would be nice to see the entire original 6 make it to the post season.

But in all reality, I probably still will continue with my decade long boycot of the NHL.

Yeah, I'd like to see Chicago have a good year. many Manitobans on that team. They look like a solid up-and-coming outfit.

Detroit will be taking another Cup. There isn't too much in the East to challenge them. I know Pittsburgh is still relatively the same, but without some of their "grit" players. It's a long year though, and that can change. Also look for Chicago to climb out of its basement and start turning heads. Other than Detroit being the powerhouse, I still think the West will be fun to watch, as some of the makeup has changed. Dallas looks stronger than before, as the Ducks I think will start to have problems ( they still need to dump some salary , and haven't signed a couple of real big names yet too! ) Calgary looks strong, the Oilers will actually make the playoffs this year and San Jose hasn't lost too much besides the offensive defenseman they had in Brian Campbell.

This will be a fun year.

How do all of you feel about Bettmen is he good or bad for the NHL. Iam not one of his biggest fans I don't think he has good grip of reality , he will never make the NHL into the NFL it is just that simple Wayne is also out ot lunch for his defense of this Idea . This is why he never opposes Bettmen .

Not a fan of Bettman. He seems to have the " Build it, and they will come " mindset when it comes to hockey. It appears that he believes that just because a metro area has a decent population, he'd be able to pull enough interest from a city to a hockey game. When you introduce a new sport to a region of the planet where it's summer for most of the year, it's going to take some time for the people to "warm up " to the game.

I think grassroots level for hockey is pretty important to have before you just drop an NHL franchise into a city. It hasn't worked for most of the southern expansion teams ( I will exclude Texas, since they actually do have some grassroots level for the game... imagine that! ).

I'm not going, but I'll be watching on sat TV somewhere, maybe Eurosport or Russia's Pianeta Sport might be showing the games.
Don't know why but it's hard to get into focus so early in the season, too many player moves, alot of new goalies around.
Check your team, you hate the Leafs, and you got a Leaf in goal.
Don't cut him yet, I might want him. Very Happy

That's hilarious. I really did not have time to draft players. How does this work? The "league" drafts players for everybody? I kinda' like my team.

Electrician, you'll have to post a weekly update here on the peeps from this forum and how they are doing. cheers!

Expansion to Europe what a joke as this is the league that has 3or4 teams on life support and probably more now that economy is going south. It is really to bad Bettman is in charge as he is a complete fool . He is trying to sell this game to all the wrong people and crowds.
He needs to get back to the roots of the game and Wayne how much has your salary and all the ones that followed hurt the league . To bad Benny Haskin started it all here in Wpg . Since then the league has taken on a life of its own . God I remember no ads on the boards and no playoffs in April . this game has evolved but it has also self imploded sorta like The NFL watch a few teams change hands there in the next little while. The game has been lost behind the betting and the marketing of the overpayed players and the more money then brains owners. it is just not the same game any longer . The NFL is a lost cause over hyped take away the betting no one would care .

I don't see expansion to Europe in my life time. Let's see if we can't strengthen the NHL in NA first. There are too many teams in the US on life support. Get them fixed. Move one to Winnipeg. SW Ontario (there are THREE teams in the New York/New Jersey area fer christs sake). Quebec City.
