Your business gets approached by organized crime. You pay them a monthly fee, or they come after your family. I wonder how much of this goes on and how it can be stopped.

Do away with most of our vices that are illegal or legalize them . Very simple .

Good question.

I've heard that this does go on quite a bit, but not in the Italian community as seen on TV, but in the Asian community with Triads.

I know for a fact that this was prevalent in Calgary in the 70's.

How to stop it?...probably education and patience.
How to stop other gang activity? Decriminalize or legalize recreational drugs. That would put a major dent into gang activity I'll bet.

To put criminals out of business we would have to elect MP's with balls!
Everything that criminals deal in, would have to be made legal!
It is a simple thought, but with many objections.
If everything was legal, business could deal in it, compete, pay taxes on their profits.
Outcome?? petty nasty- 40% to 60% reduction in police, 75% reduction in court , 70% reduction in lawyers. 70% reduction in jails and penitentiaries.
Our economy would fail?

RC's right. If you want to stop organized crime, legalize everything. That way the government would get involved, set up crown corporations, bureaucracies, tax the sh1t out of it and the criminals would get so frustrated, they'd quit and take jobs at IKEA.

Criminals would be frustrated...because they'd be out of a job....which was the point I believe. Sure, people would keep smoking dope, etc. but that would be a constant anyway. Afterall, Prohibition didn't stop people from drinking; it merely made criminals out of those that supplied the booze. The government does that now.

oh please.... BOOZE AND CIGARETTES are legal... yet there is a huge amount of organized crime around smuggling... nevermind the theft of both since not everyone can afford them

The only way to get rid of organized crime is to make everything legal.. and everything free and to force Women and men into the sex trade ( also free )

If the government wasn't so greedy with their taxes on both, they could keep the prices down and eliminate the smuggling. It isn't the idea that's a problem, it's the implementation. That's what always screws it up.

Ha. For April fool's day once, someone stuck a kodak camera with the flash cube on top, next to a traffic light. A photo of it made it onto the local newspaper the day after.
